normal system and cpu temperatures
2004-10-27, 1:20 AM #1
ive been noticing that my pc has been really hot lately. i checked it after playing about 15 or 20 minutes of JK and i had a system temp of 86 degrees F and a CPU temp of 114 degrees F

so im wondering, what is a normal temperature and should i look into getting a case fan

That's perfectly normal. Something like 30~ish C. Always measure in degrees celsius, not fahrenheit.

114 is 46 degrees C, and while that's warmer than most nerds want, its nowhere near any sort of problem area. Generally, as long as it stays below 60C, you are good. Although most CPUs are built to take over 80C, they begin to have problems above 60C.

My CPU idles at 46C, so you are fine :D

Mine idles at 24. <3 my pwnsome air system.

Seriously though--as long as it's below 70 you should be prefectly fine.

I have a crap air system and my Barton idles at room temperature (23-24 C) :p

My cpu idles at 32 C, video card at 38 C, and mobo chipset at 33 C.

I think it's weird the CPU is the coolest thing in there, but that's what happens when you strap 800 grams of copper to the thing.

Well, the maximum safe temperature of a CPU depends on the chip... Most Athlon XPs and Pentium 4s are rated to be comfortably safe around the range of 70-90 Celsius (though of course, the higher the temperature, the worse the performance). My Athlon 64 is rated to be able to run safely at a temperature of above 100 celsius (212 Fahrenheit); a good thing, because despite a gigantic, $25US heatsink and fan set, (I think Spork is mistaken on the weight of his heatsink; that's two full pounds, and mine is mabye 10 ounces, even though his may be copper) It's still running at arround 65 Celsius... (The chipset is much lower, at a mere 40, and since my card's a Radeon 7000, it doesn't even have a fan, and is mabye at 35)

Got a 500g copper heatsink/120mm fan on my Athlon64 3000+, runs at most 39 degrees c so far.
"Whats that for?" "Thats the machine that goes 'ping'" PING!
Q. How many testers does it take to change a light bulb?
A. We just noticed the room was dark; we don't actually fix the problems.

So that's what, bout 27 ounces. Just below 2 pounds of copper.

[edit] thank you Emon :)

I have a liquid nitrogen cooled system.

I wish
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.
