I keep hearing this sound played at seemingly-random intervals on my speakers. I traced it back to Trillian playing it on an "SMS" event -- what exactly is "SMS"?

I just disabled sounds completely in Trillian. I hated hearing it giggle every time someone said "lol."

All Nokia phones (and perhaps others, my Samsung doesnt) have those 4 beeps setup as the default SMS sound.
