Well, I mean for what you're getting for the price. I know it aint exactly dirt cheap, nor is it what you could get if you build your computer, but it's still a damn good deal, dontcha think? :)

I think the video card is pretty good, based on what it says, but I aint too technical when it comes to vid cards.

That video card looks dirty. For that price, you should be getting something a bit better.

Video card is a big no no.

Customizability, perhaps. I know that professional loads faster, strangely enough. I had used the same computer for two clean installs of Windows, and the one with professional booted faster.
2004-10-28, 3:00 PM #11
I heard XP Pro comes with a built in firewall, and restrictions on your downloads, unlike Home. I'm not certain, but this is what an IBM rep told me (and I do know they lie).

The video card I chose, because I wasn't sure which one (as I said I dont know jack about video card's), I can give a list of the one's available and their price's.. Here:

Integrated AGP Graphics

GeForceFX 5200-8X 128MB Video Card w/TV Out (Add $95.99)

ATI Radeon 9800SE 128MB AGP with TV-Out (Add $205.98)

ATI Radeon 7000 64MB DDR w/ TV-Out (Add $68.99)

Geforce MX4000 64MB AGP Card w/ TV-Out (Add $68.99)

ATI Radeon 9550 256MB AGP Card w/ TV-Out (Add $136.99)

ATI Radeon 9200 Series 128MB 8X AGP Card (Add $75.99)

ATI Radeon 9250 256MB AGP Card (Add $109.99)

I just chose the one that looked best to me, but I really have no clue which one out of them is the best, second best, third best, etc.
2004-10-28, 3:02 PM #12
Radeon 9250? Never heard of them, must be new. Stay away though, it is obviously a budget card.
2004-10-28, 3:07 PM #13
Ouch, what manufature computer is this? You can get all those video cards you listed there for a hellalot less at www.newegg.com
2004-10-28, 3:13 PM #14
Stay away from integrated graphics cards.

You definatly don't want a 256mb one either. Integrated cards use system memory for theirs, so you'll efffectivley be left with 768mb of RAM.

Please, do not go with any of those cards. You can get a 9800SE for ~130$ on newegg. If you absolutley have to go with a pre made comp, just take the integrated video and buy something seperate afterwards, save yourself some money.

Yes, but can you play video games on your GF or browse the internet? I think not. :)

Oh, and Temp, if your going to be gaming a lot, or want to play newish games, don't get anything lower then a 9700.

Integrated chipsets really suck, i agree on that.

I had a via unichrome chipset before I got my radeon 9200, and it sucked badly. Games would crash /and or freeze, and often corrupted the hard drive when it did this.

The average pre-built computer is not ready for intensive gaming.

nah. Women are interchangable and can be replaced if things get bad, but if you buy a s***ty computer, you're going to be stuck with it for a few years or until you can afford enough to upgrade.

you PAY for porn?

and with ATI stay away from anything that says SE and all the other cards in the list...

nvidia stay away from anything that says MX or FX

best card for the price would be the 9800Pro 128MB ~$200

Out of complete boredom, I have assembled a computer for you:

Intel Pentium 4/ 3.2E GHz 800MHz FSB, 1MB L2 Cache, Hyper Threading Technology - $221

ABIT "IS7-E2" i865PE Chipset Motherboard - $75

Kingston VALUERAM 184-Pin 1GB(512MBx2) DDR PC-2700 - $168

ANTEC Solution Series Mid Tower Case with 300W Power Supply - $58

ATI RADEON 9800PRO Video Card - $233

Western Digital 80GB 7200RPM IDE Hard Drive - $56

Lite-On 8X Double Layer DVD+/-RW Drive - $67

Microsoft Windows XP HOME Edition With Service Pack 2 - $91

Now that is much sexier than what you are looking at, and comes out at just $969. It's up to you though :\

Switch the Intel with an AMD 64 and you'll get more out of gaming. Not to mention you should be able to cut a significant portion of the cost down. And the heat.

Replace it with an XP and you'll still get better gaming performance, and will cut down the price tremendously.

If nothing else, here's a great guide at hardocp for your own comp (1500 bucks @ newegg, though as I understand it you're canadian, still a good guide as per parts)

I agree, go with an Athlon 64 and it'll cut the cost down a little, not to mention power requirements and heat.

I'd also go with something like a 350W power supply from a good manufacturer. 300W is a little low, even coming from an Antec.

Find the Antec Sonata. Quiet case, looks great, comes with a 380W Antec TruePower.

I got a
Athlon 64 3200+
Radeon 9800 pro
120Gb Segate Barracuda 8MB cache 8.5 MS seek time
1GB of PC 3200 RAM
A 52x 32x 52x CD RW
19in Flat screen monitor
ect.
8 months ago for ~1300$ all brand name components.

In other words, keep looking.

Epically where they say they want you to add 205$ for a 9800 SE. That card retails for I think around 150$

Just build your own. I will be happy to recommend the parts you should get.
2004-10-29, 12:44 PM #30
It's decent, but upgrade the video card. The 9250 will kill you in the newer games. I'd also want faster memory. 2700 is old stuff nowadays. *shrug*

Damn it, why can't this just be easy for me :( And yes, I know building your own computer is the best way to go, but I reiterate, for me this is not an option. My parents are extremely stubborn in that way, even though it may cost them more for less, and even though they want to keep the budget on it as low as possible... I know...It doesn't make sense to me either...
2004-10-29, 2:36 PM #32
Erm... You can build a better one for cheaper too, you know...
The one you're looking at is only good for Word processing and Internet.
2004-10-29, 2:45 PM #33
Tell them the components come with warranties of their own. That may change their mind, I know it changed my parent's minds (They said in no way would they buy a computer without a warranty--I told them it comes with one of its own). If nothing else, tell them to give you the money and you'll get it yourself, order all the parts, assemble, and say it 'came' from a manufacturer ;)

You sir, are wise.

But even if you do read all the tech manuals on how to do this and that on building your own computer, how long does it usually take to build one from scratch, as I would be doing if I elected to chose that way?
2004-10-29, 2:54 PM #35
Took me an hour, first time. The only time you even have to be careful with anything is the processor (it's somewhat delicate). It's really just logic; if you go through your old comp and see how things are connected you should be fine.

I'm surprised nobody said anything about the RAM on that original system. PC-2700 is 333 MHz (166 x 2), whereas the CPU is an effective 800 MHz FSB, or 200 MHz x 4. The RAM is a slower speed than the CPU, so it would basically be slowing your CPU and lowering the potential speed you could get if you had the proper speed RAM for the system. You'll want at least PC-3200(400 MHz DDR) if you're going with any of the 800 FSB Pentium 4s.

I just thought that should be mentioned.
2004-10-30, 5:25 AM #38
Building a computer may seem scary, but yeah you'll find it's so easy you'll never ever want to do it any other way.
