Gmail is making them squirm...

I went to check my mostly spam filled Netscape account just now, and discovered that I suddenly have 250 meg of free space available to me. It was previously FIVE.

I, for one, find that amusing. How many email providers have done something similar now? Do they really feel THAT threatened by Gmail? Or is it just a cascadeing effect? One person felt threatened, upped their storage, and now the rest are doing it to stay competative.

To make this more legit, post the amusing things you've suddenly found upon checking your email. So long as it's mostly clean...

What I'm wondering is; how long is it going to be before someone creates a bunch of gmail accounts, uploads songs/movies, and gives the passwords to anyone who wants them? I can't possibly be the only one who's thought of this...

except the SA goons tried that, and they deleted the emails. Distributing pirated files is against the TOS and it's really easy to track (especially since their software is designed to display ads to you based on the content of your emails).

There used to be sites that allowed you to store files in a "personal space" much like Yahoo's briefcases, and allowed you to invite people to use the space. Needless to say that this was very popular on the warez scene.

Hotmail upped pretty much everyone I know's storage to 250MB, mine remains at 2MB... No one sends me e-mail anyways :gbk:

I think hotmail/netscape/yahoo just decided that no-one was going to use 250meg any more than they were going to use a gig, it's just bragging rights.

Who here has gmail, and how much of your inbox is used up? Come on, surprise me.

At the current rate I've been filling up my gmail inbox, it will take me about 150 years to fill it up completely.

Considering that the majority of email is text, I think its a good bet that these email providers are using some kind of compression to store the email on their servers. So you really arent using up as much space as it seems. Also, like Ghorg said, very few people probably actually use most of their space.

I'm using .45 MB of mine... :) The nice thing about GMail is the smap blocker. I use it to sign up for nearly everything, and it doesn't get overrun with spam. And when I check it, it's almost always empty. It's really starting to clear out my OSC mail, which sadly, I might end up changing for the sake of killing off the spam once and for all...

I'm not even going to check because nobody ever e-mails me, they just send texts to my mobile phone instead, and even then those are few and far between - what can I say, I just have a small core of friends and that will do me nicely!
