I hate timed games...

So yesterday I broke down and bought Max Payne and Hitman 2. Right now, I am right at the END of Max Payne, and pissed off.

I've snapped the first cable, but I can't for the life of me figure out how the HELL to snap the second one. I've tried walkthroughs, the text tells me weapons to use, but not how to get over there, or what specifically to aim for. Or the text is good, but you need images for a reference, and the links to the aforementioned images are busted. Add into that the fact that I despise timed games. I like to relax while I play, not rush about madly trying to figure out what I need to do before I die and the game ends. It kills my concentration.

So exactly what do I need to do to snap that damned cable? The first one took two grenades, I swear I've landed at least SIX on the other one and nothing happens. I tried the suggestion I got online to snipe it, but I can't figure out what I need to be aiming for. I put an entire clip into it and got nothing...

Gah. Crap like that frustrates the hell out of me. It's perfectly obvious what I need to do, but how to do it is a big black hole.

[edit] sitting through the same cutscenes over, and over, and over again without a way to skip them is also very, very, VERY annoying [/edit]

uh... just use the sniper rifle. Snipe in on it and shoot.

You need to shoot them quite near the bottom too IIRC.

The game has a timer because it's supposed to be suspenseful. If you dont like games that are suspenseful, try Solitaire.

I know how you feel--it's insanely hard to get to. I had to turn on the contrast/brightness of the tv so far (I played through it first on the X-Box) before I got it visible. 'Tisn't easy.

That very reason is why I get so pissed off at the Final Fantasy games. I swear it's the most annoying thing, ever.

Adding a timer is a crappy way to add "suspense" - it's an artificial construct that takes away from the imersiveness of the game.

Except the cutscenes are the point of Final Fantasy games

Oh, and Katamari Damacy is a timed puzzle game but it's still awesome.

It's not like there's an actual clock at the top of the screen. There's a 30 or 45 second period 'till lift off for the chopper, which is announced by the pilot. It seems like a perfectly good idea to me.

You didn't need to use grenades on that first cable ... you can use your lead pipe to break it. What you need to do is hit/shoot the cables right at the very base.

Yeah. That's not an artificial use of a timer to add suspense. It's pretty legitimate.

I agree, however, I still think it's extremely annoying to have to sit through a cutscene a million times, especially a long one (as is the usual case in FF games). They should have implemented a choice for the user where they could elect to skip or watch the cutscene.

I don't know how many times in FFX I had to go from save point, to very long cutscene before a boss battle, only to die and redo it all over again.

Maybe it's meant to be punishment for how much your characters suck?

FFX was not a difficult game by any stretch of the imagination.

There's plenty of good guides over at GameFAQs.

Quote:
As you noticed in the first cut scene, the swaying central tower on the roof has broken two of its four cable moorings. The two remaining will have to be shot, specifically the bolt that anchors them to the large steel booms at the corners of the building. When either cable is released, the goons swarm out. (As mentioned earlier, after one minute has elapsed, the second cut scene starts and then they'll be in your face regardless.) Use the whole first minute to relax, gather your nerve, and line up a shot with the M79. Turn around and jump up onto the low roof of the long structure behind you and stand at the edge, about halfway down. Aim for the middle of the sliding glass doors. As soon as the cut scene ends, the goons rush the door, so pull the trigger as it opens. The idea is to get them all at once; otherwise you've got trouble.

Don't panic; there's plenty of time to spare. Jump down to the main roof and stand on the small platform in the corner by the steel boom. Load the sniper rifle and use the scope to sight the anchor bolt of the distant cable, then load the Colt Commando and fire at the anchor bolt of the near cable. One last thing -- simply fire away at the base of the central tower, then sit back and watch Nicole Horne get what she deserves.
