The Grudge

Has anyone seen the movie yet? I didn't expect much but was pleasantly suprised. I must say that I think this is the scariest movie that I've ever seen. I don't think I'll be sleeping well for quite some time.

Feel free to DEL this thread if it has been done before. I did a search, but the only other thread I saw was a The Grudge thread that was posted before the movie was released.

It was a terrible movie that I didn't find scary at all. I actually spent more time laughing than being scared.

For people unlike oSiRiS (or people who have a soul), this movie was actually quite frightening. I went with a group (mostly girls) and on the car ride back from the theatre, one of the girls began to cry because the speaker in the car made a sound similar to a sound from the movie. Also, the girls were so scared that they got one of the guys to stay up with them all night. I recommend this as a good movie to see.

Best comedy of the year. Seriously, every time I see the preview on TV, that cat kid makes me laugh until well after the commercial is over.

I like what they said on Something Awful the other day. A good point was made. Why do ghosts do scary things that their victims won't see, like appearing in the mirrior when they're not looking?

haha thanks for that Trige, i really need to see thios movie now... then i can finally find out if i have a soul or not.

to be honest i always thought someone must be a bit of a crank to let a movie get to you that much (well.. apart from Cannibal Holocaust... but that movie is way sicker than anything the movies have to offer... gutting a turtle is not a pretty sight for film).

Chaz Ghostle, the reason why the ghosts appear in mirrors when the victims aren't looking is purely for the audience. Many great horror films utilize this method of adding suspense. For example, in John Carpenter's Halloween . The Shape is always shown lurking in the shadows and standing near the victim without them noticing. This makes the viewer of the film begin to say "Look out! He's right behind you! Get out of the room!!!". Unfortunately, it'd be better if they thought it and not said it. Whoever made that comment from Something Awful is a freakin' idiot and should never critique another movie for as long as he or she lives.

Thought the movie was scarey as hell. Very reminescent of a something like a bad acid or mushroom trip. Like when the hair does its thing (that misty kinda thing), and when the noises do the smeared-left-to-right-back-to-front thing...very scary.

Too bad the story wasn't very good. I wonder if the Japanese version was much better.

Forget about the audience. Why would the ghost do that?

to be honest, the trailer didnt make it out to be scary at all.

a load of random double jointed blue japanese people appearing at random in order to spook buffy doesnt seem intense.

yeah i will.

just a bit cynical because the american remake of the ring was atrocious.

i have a feel this may follow suit... the only saving grace so far are two words that come with its title... "Sam Raimi".

(does bruce campbell have a cameo?)

Nope, no Bruce, sorry :(

Because it's a freakin' movie, man! It's not real life, it doesn't have to make sense (although real life doesn't at most times either). It's to scare the audience and build suspense (as I was obviously hinting at in the previous post). Don't mean to sound pissed off, I just love horror and will defend it to the grave!

but on a semiotic level, it does make sense... conveying a meaning is equally important to physical realism in film.

its when the narrative doesn't explain that meaning is when it gets stupid.

It wasn't bad, but I wasn't impressed. I jumped a couple of times, but afterwards I just went home and slept like a baby in my pitch black and noisy basement.

The problem is that all of the scenes were huge cliches. You see the girl crawl up in a dark attic... COME ON! A bath filled with trouble water? The guy walks up closer to inspect it... You just KNOW a hand will come out of there and grab him.

I love the part where he still sells the house to them even after the hand grabs him.

Just saw it last night... don't really know what to think about the movie. While it was scarier than than The Ring, it definitely didn't have the depth or symbolism of it. In fact, the story was incredibly slow and cliche. You can tell everytime when something's going to jump at you. The only parts that made me go "awesome" was when Buffy was talking to her boyfriend on the bus, and all of a sudden you see the woman's face in the window reflection. That caught me off guard. And of course, the freakin' awesome ending, with the wife zombie, how it crawled down the stairs... that was the only part that gave me the creeps. The sound it made while chasing Buffy was definitely creepy.

The movie was predictable. There was only one time where I was scared. The other times I tensed up because I knew something was going to happen and I wasn't disappointed. But yes, it was a comedy. But not because of the movie. It's was a comedy because of the teenage girls in the theatre that squealed anytime anything even remotely suspenseful happened.

Some of you must have had an accident as a child that disabled your brain from having the ability to get scared, or either you're simply desensitized.. It's been like two days since I've seen the movie, and I was freaking out in the shower today when I pictured the crazy dead lady in my head...you know, the one with the scary burping noise. The only way that I can go throughout my day without getting scared it to think of a brick wall when the movie images pop into my head (similar to Village of the Damned). I'm a huge horror fan, who goes to see every horror film at the theatre (those released in the US at least) and I still say this is the scariest movie I've ever seen. I don't even believe in ghosts...but it doesn't matter when she appears in my head...!

BURRRRRRRRRRRRRRR! OMG run.

No, I've been legitimately scared before. What Lies Beneath jacked me up a little, Event Horizon really messed me up alot, and the american version of The Ring was pretty scary. Except one of the opening scenes which I laughed at.

The Grudge had the same issue with the opening scene; the first scene is of a guy tipping over a railing and committing suicide. It's such an awkward scene that I just started laughing.

I went to see it a couple weeks ago. I thought it was pretty good, certainly scary, but then again, I get scared easy. I actually thought they did the trailer really well, which I also think is why it's done so good in theaters so far, apparently doing double what the highest expectations were for it. It was the line "When someone dies in the grip of a powerful rage..." that just got me so intrigued; it sounds so cool.

I love openings like that. I saw a movie one time... I forgot which one it is, but it's supposed to be suspenseful and serious and it's just so random and seemingly dumb (because you dont know the plot yet) that you have to laugh at it.

My cousin and I laughed our asses off at the suicide scene, but we soon discovered that the laughing ends, and the TERROR TAKES OVER!
