I would go with nVidia, because apparently when you order things from ATI, it takes three months for it to ship...

People say . . .

NVidia has better drivers for their cards.

ATI has better cards.

Okay, I can't really pick one with some sort of support with knowledge, but I have had a good life with NVidia . . . .

From what I've heard Radeon mobile cards are very good. I haven't heard much about nVidia though. That doesn't mean they're bad though.

Tech forum?

And I say the Radeon, because that's all I've really had experience with.

In case you are ever inclined to use linux... take Nvidia.

I like how your poll items are for individual cards, not for each company. Comparing one company to the other when each has hundreds of unique products is simply asinine. In this case, the Radeon is the superior card.

Ditto. My mobile Radeon 9200 hates ATi's drivers. They're installed, glxgears works fine, but I'll be ****ed if there's a single game that will work on my laptop.

But if you're only into Windows, get the ATi, no second thought about it.

I have a radeon mobility 9000 or something on my laptop and I can run quake3 on it ;) Of course, *I* didn't do the configuration, the guys who built the computer did (laclinux.com).

9000 and below are that special driver set (can't remember name) by those opensource guys. Everything above that is ATi.

read the site... ati doesn't support laptops in their drivers

you have to get drivers from the company that made the laptop

The Ati 9xxx series was always better than the nVidia 5xxx series.

I have an ATI Radeon 9600XT and I love it.
2004-10-31, 8:21 PM #21
Well, I can't really make a fair judgement because I haven't really used any ATI products (the radeon series that is). I've been using nVidia cards for a good two years. Even though the Geforce MX series kind of sucks (I don't think I ever saw a difference between the Geforce 2 MX and the Geforce 4 MX) but my latest card, Geforce FX 5600, has done me well so far. I did buy a Ati Radeon 9600 a month ago but I never took the card out of the box because I originally though my current card was busted but it was not so I returned the Radeon to the store. I might make next card a ATI radeon when I feel I need a new one.

Are those two cards you are considering purchasing? I don't know if there's a Mobility 9600 XT availible (I'm fairly certain there isn't), so I'd have to say the ATI card here; ATI has been in the mobile graphics arena for over a decade, whereas NVidia is relatively new in the market, having only about 3 years' experience so far.

As for these claims about ATI cards being incompatable with Linux, I haven't been able to personally test this myself, but other people I know who've tried have managed to get their newer Radeon cards working under Linux with no problem; I suspect the incomapatability claim is just poison from the NVidia/Linux Fanboys; neither company would be stupid enough to not work hard against any incompatability issues.

I say go with ATi. I never really liked the FX architecture. Anyway, if it was of the 6x00 architecture I'd say go nVidia.

I recommend the Ati, just out of sheer wariness of anything Nvidia made between the GF4 and the 6800.

Yeah I know they don't, I just wish they should. Like Compaq would ever get off their *** and make Linux drivers for the graphics chips used in their laptops.

I have used ATI and nVidia. I have to agree with everyone so far. ATI seems to be superior.

Yeah, just as bad for my dad's Presario desktop. Not a single Compaq driver left on there, they're all out of date. Reference drivers have been doing fine with everything other than the onboard LAN.
