I got banned for a few minutes... just after i'd posted my picture - are any admins jealous out there or what? I don't know what happened but i just went online, the forums said i was banned... and GAH? i was banned... but now i seem to be un-banned.

Are you on dial-up? You might have gotten an IP when you connected which was previously banned because of someone else.

If IP banning is still done? Enh.

Yeh I'm on dial-up. I thought thats what happened but then the system is seriously flawed in that you can simply disconnect and re-dial..... an admin really should remove the IP block on the e-mail i sent to forums@massassi.net - it's useless anyway!

I do think that IP banning is outdated... I use a random computer on-campus where I am, each with a unique, fixed, IP address. This means that were there to be another Massassian who used the library at CMichU, that would cause conflicts if they were IP banned...

The IP address you sent in the email is not on the Ban list. All I can say is that it must have been a forum glitch, there havent been any posts about you on the Admin forum so I'm assuming no Admin banned you.

And yes, we still IP Ban because its the only way to prevent some determined trolls (mikeyisdumb being the most recent one) from registering a new hotmail email account each time they are banned to make a new forum account to continue their trolling. We only do it as a last resort however- there have been conflicts in the past.

The only other solution would be to block anonymous email addresses... any .com addresses, and allow only non-anonymous addresses such as .edu ones. I dont think very many of our members would be happy with us if we did that.

Yeah for the most part IP bans keep determined dial uppers out of here but most routers now adays give you new IP's everytime you connect to them fresh so a simple network connect disconnect would get you by the ban. Unless they have advanced the IP ban system over the years... I dunno I haven't been IP banned in 2 years now.

Actually, new account registration was disabled for a couple weeks because of pugler, we didnt just block hotmail accounts.

If such a situation ever happened again, we would probably just just set it so that new accounts had to be approved by an admin before they were activated. I dont think the old forums had this option.

i usta get cought by the IP bans a lot, being on AOL dile up (when i am at home) and all.

Odd, I'm on People PC dial up and haven't been caught yet....Odd. Although, I accidentaly ban evaded in the chat once:D

They IP banned teh Mikus Couldn't even view the forums.

There are actually only 11 ips currently banned... and that list goes back to when Brian came back and granted all banned members a reprieve.

Woah, apparently I was pardoned by Brian...ha...I was banned a year or so ago (for something lame that I honestly don't remember), yet I have still faithfully perused the forums ever since. Lurked for a long time before I registered too, I've been around here since '99. Much better this time, promise.
