Boycott ATI
2004-11-01, 5:24 PM #1
As many of you already know, ATI has extremely poor customer service. I have personally experienced this twice, first when I had problems with the drivers for an old Radeon 32Mb back in 2000; and now, as I have been waiting three months for them to ship the X800 XT that I ordered.

They may, as some people think, make superior products, but this doesn't make up for their complete lack of good customer service.

In light of these events, I am asking each and every one of you to help me boycott ATI. Never buy any of their products again. nVidia all the way!

I'll buy the best bang for the buck, regardless of customer service, as I would never bother to use customer service anyways. I make love to my 9800 Pro AiW every night.

My 9600XT roxors and I would never trade it in for the equivalent Geforce. I had nothing but troubles with my nVidia TNT and TNT2 (especially the TNT2, which fried).

Yes, I admit that I wanted to buy the best bang for my buck, and that's why I chose ATI. However, had I known back in August that I still would not have my video card now, I would have chosen nVidia in a heartbeat.

I'm sure they aren't shipping your card just to spite you. There couldn't possibly be a legitimate reason why they have yet to ship your card.

Uh... How about NO.

I love my 9600XT, and my TV Wonder is godly.

I'll NEVER understand why so many people feel the need to pre-order the latest and greatest graphics card from either company. You pay out the nose for it, and something better is out 6 to 12 months later, at which point the price drops.

I like maxing out my video settings as much as the next man, but do you really need it THAT badly?

Sorry buddy, I'm sorry it hasn't been shipped to you...but that's just not good enough a reason to ask a forum full of people to boycott a company IMO.
2004-11-01, 6:40 PM #9
A boycott would work if I was originally buying ATI products each day.

True. I had similar problems with a Radeon a while ago. I soon got fed up with them (especially when I found out they were from Canada!) and settled with dependable NVidia.

I wouldn't recommend boycotting a company, but go ahead if the rebel spirit is wild in your heart . . .

No it's not. If you read up at all, you'd know there's a shortage of them everywhere (at least from ATi themselves). But of course, you just blame them for circumstances they can't control. Good job. You win at life.

Not only that, but nVidia has given me some of the worst experiences. Their windows drivers refuse to update/install (both video card and motherboard), and the last time I tried updating my chipset drivers I had to reformat because it deleted the old ones, told me to restart, and WHOOPS! NO MOTHERBOARD DETECTION!

Final word--ATi's new card (the X800) is far from the best bang for your buck. The 6800GT, nearly 150 bucks cheaper in some circumstances, can beat it hands down on a lot of games, and either matches or almost matches it on the rest.

I was under the impression that the X800 XT wasn't released yet.

You might want to see if you pre-ordered it.

Maybe I'm thinking of a different card. Weird, I coulda sworn it was the X800 XT.

There's no card that is slated to come out yet. The X800 XT has been out forever.

Out of curiosity, what did ATI say about the cause of the delay in shipping?
2004-11-01, 7:46 PM #17
I have no idea what the cause of the delay is. I can find nothing on their website, and my e-mails have so far gone unanswered.

Why don't you ring them instead? Here are contact details from their website in regards to sales.

If you would like to place an order or have a question about an existing order, you may contact a ShopATI Customer Service Representative by email at service@shop.ati.com or by calling
1-888-9SHOPATI or 1-888-974-6728, Monday through Friday, 9AM - 9PM EST, excluding holidays.

Phone calls are harder to ignore than e-mail. If that doesn't work then contact your local consumer affairs division, or whatever the American equivalent is of the institution that helps customers deal with retailers.

The reason it hasn't come out very much is because the GDDR3 memory they're using is very hard to come by.

I wanted to buy an ATI too. But since the Linux support is quite poor I got the Geforce FX5900... so I supported you!

I think people need to stop bashing ATI's drivers... That huge driver problem happened what.. 4, 5 years ago? Let it be..

And as to the service problem, I've never had an issue with them. Have you tried calling to confirm your order?

The Linux drivers can be a pain in the *** on some distributions, I think that's what most people are referring to. The Windows drivers are bliss. Never had a problem.

i've got a 9600 pro and i'm happy with it.

no sale here buddy, i have no complaint with them.

The top of the line Nvidia card (6800 Ultra I believe) is just as hard to come by as the x800xt.

So... BOYCOTT NVIDIA

My 9700 Pro was defective when I bought it. I got an RMA over the phone, and sent it in. Within the week they sent it back with a diagnostic proving that the card was indeed defective, and was replaced with a new card. They also paid for all shipping.
2004-11-02, 1:43 PM #31
I've not had any problems with my 9600 and i'm hoping to get that upgraded soon ... nvidia false advertise... ever seen that "normal graphics versus cinematic"? That was a completely different image they used so it was hardly a comparison. ATI rock my world personally.

ATI has had a shortage of chips or somesuch recently. Apparently they're blaming their chip manufacturer in Taiwan.

That could at least explain what's taking so damn long, but I still think you're right about having them at least tell you SOMETHING about your purchase...

ATI harvests kittens for use in their cards. Cute kittens.
