Odd that they're just now noticing that this copyright infringment has been going on since, what, the early '90's?

McKool Smith contends that these 12 companies infringed on their patent, "Method and Apparatus for Spherical Planning," or patent 4,734,690. The patent was originally filed in March 1988 for a specific method of displaying 3-D images on a monitor.

Kakdamn I hate our stupid patent system. Those idiots didnt defent the patent for over 16 years, and now they want royalties? GEEZE!

Won't go anywhere, you can't patent something that is just a logical advance in technology.

There was a scare in paintball a few years ago when the person who patented switches on paintball markers threatened to sue anyone who manufactured electric markers, but it went nowhere.

You can't do that. That's like putting a patent on swimming.

No, map makers are merely using a tool to create something that uses the technology, they aren't actually distributing any form of the technology itself.

Here's a link to the offical patent, at the US Patent office:

http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO1&Sect2=HITOFF&d=PALL&p=1&u=/netahtml/srchnum.htm&r=1&f=G&l=50&s1=4,734,690.WKU.&OS=PN/4,734,690&RS=PN/4,734,690

Looking at that, the patent is easily outdated, due to being so vague. In other words, they've patented a mathematical formula for adjusting a drawing according to perspective... So in essence, all of us if we were to draw realisticly 3D images. I say this gets thrown out, quickly. I appriciate their sense of capitalism, but this is a silly case, and is an attempt to clamp down on ideas, which I consider to be higher than capitalism.

Patents are stupid because there is no such thing as an original idea.

Really? Where do you suppose all these ideas are coming from, if there's no such thing as an original idea?

Well, if Christians are correct, all things come from God so... maybe He should be sueing us for copyright infringment, no? :D

Then I guess "now don't you get any ideas" has an entirely new meaning, and we're all going to Hell, if that's the case.:p
