Is quicktime player compatable with .mov files? Because I need a media player that is compatable with .mov files, and I guess Windows Media isn't, so that's a bummer, should I download Quicktime?

.mov is the offical format of Quicktime. I'd get it, but about 3/4ths of the other people here will tell you it's a worthless POS. I can't for the life of me ever get a good reason why.

because every time I run it I have to say no about 10 times about upgrading to "pro," and then all these ads start playing, and there's no simple "open" option... you have to like open in a new window and stuff. It's just annoying.

The Windows QT player is the biggest hog of system resources Ive ever seen. Its terrible. Every install of it Ive ever seen would take the CPU usage to 100% when playing. Thats just not right, especially when other players like VLC can play back the same file with little or no CPU overhead....

MOV files can actully contain a number of different formats, namely Sorenson and apple's version of MPEG4. Both suck.

Even WMP is better at playing them than Quicktime, heh.

100%? Right. I just did a quick test with a Red vs Blue movie. It never peaked above 17%. I also have Photoshop, Firebird (yes FireBIRD not Fox), and Trillian running. Amount of RAM being used only jumped 8%. I'm not sure what type of hogging resources you're talking about here, but to me, this seems rather acceptable and normal.

As for the encoders, why should I care? In what way do they suck? Hell, ANYTHING can suck. Linux can suck. The best programs ever made can suck.

GBK, it's well known that you despise anything remotely having to do with Apple or Microsoft. That said, how much of that argument is actual fact that YOU'VE seen and how much is just you ranting about how badly something sucks because you hate Apple?

quicktime is great on macs, but on Pcs, it can bring even a good system to its knees, like GBK said. Divx is a much better compressor and is much less resource-demanding.

I also have never had any of the problems with Quicktime that so many people complain about. Although I do prefer divx... its just so much... sexier.

I dont hate everything Apple has done. Some of their hardware is actully pretty good. I just hate their software, their interfaces in particular.

Its funny you should say that, because as far as I know, Apple outsources the development of a lot of its hardware. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

Fullscreen.

Good point, BobTheMasher, it has no fullscreen unless you pay. And even in the Pro version fullscreen has often been buggy and locked up for me.

I like quicktime, never had any problems with it...also use divx as well, although i've found that used more for longer files than quicktime and not as good quality, but guessing thats due to the options you select when encoding....

no, in the one I had (don't have it anymore) there was no "open movie" option under file. I swear. it actually said, "open movie in new window," and that was it

Nothing beats DiVX/XViD when it comes to high quality, low bitrate video.

I usually encode TV shows with 1 Mb/s DiVX video(2-pass) and 192 Kb/s MP3 audio at 640x480 and they're very much watchable(as in obviously not like DVD quality, but better than VHS quality) at fullscreen. That's after they've already ran through the TV card from the satellite receiver(so there's degredation there), and have been encoded as MPEGs(more degredation) during capture.

Sure, you can make a ****ty looking DiVX video if you don't know what you're doing or just try to squeeze it into the smallest file as possible.

Quicktime is horrible. Google for quicktime alternative, it's just the codec so you can play quictime files in any player (I suggest bsplayer) there is also real alternative for realplayer.

Anyone who uses or even THINKS of using RealPlayer is an idiot and should be shot at once.

And who said you had to pay Emon? Not that I'm implying anything of course...

Real... *shudder*

It's funny how they try to hide their free player from you when you look for it on their site. (I assume they still do that at least, I haven't used that POS in years.)

Anyone want to awnser that simple question? Are there any .MOV editors with which I can add audio tracks to MOV files and stuff?
