New form of AGP slots???
2004-04-11, 3:23 PM #1
When the fark did they change this??? I just bought a new Radeon 9600XT 128mb VIVO to replace my aging 7500LE, and it doesn't fit in my AGP slot!

Look at what's missing! With that little 'notch' missing, I can't fit it into my AGP slot [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif] I just paid 300$ farking Canadian dollars and now I'm gonna need a motherboard along with it? When the hell did this change anyway? Shouldn't an old AGP slot (4x mind you) still remain an AGP slot??

Dammit [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]

Anyone have a spare 440BX mobo lying around that would fit my card?? [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]

It should still fit. That split's there, but there's only one real split in the actual AGP slot.

I'm not sure why that's done with some cards, but it is.
2004-04-11, 3:29 PM #5
Yeah that's the problem. The split in my AGP slot is closer to the front, as shown on the green (7500LE) card. My new 9600XT (red) isn't notched at this location and therefore cannot fit in the slot [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]

Oh wait, yeah, I completely forgot about the difference in AGP 2.0 and 3.0 specs.

2.0 has the split farther on the left side, 3.0 has it farther on the right. Cards with splits in both places are made for both specs. Newer cards only work with 3.0(hence only that one notch).

So yeah, your motherboard is obviously AGP 2.0(can do 1x, 2x, and 4x). So you are going to need an AGP 3.0(1x, 2x, 4x, 8x) motherboard for that card.

********* [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif] I should've been keeping up with all of this stuff... I guess I'll have to wait until I get my new computer before I can use it [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]

I didn't realize cards had moved to purely AGP 3.0 yet. I guess the last generation did that. Oh well, that'll be obsolete within the end of the year too, so oh well, heh.

Return it to the store. And maybe call up the company and ask, "wtf?"

oSiRiS - that card doesn't have any video inputs [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif] And doesn't come with HL2 [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

I'm running a WinXP Pro/Gentoo box on a P3-750mhz CPU. Socket 370, using a Slot 1 adapter for my 440BX mobo.

I found this mobo on ebay.ca, which if I understand ATI's specs properly, should work with the 9600XT. Can anyone confirm this?

Buying the motherboard wouldn't be at a loss - I was given a stick of 512mb of ram, but my mobo only recognizes 256mb per slot (768mb total). The mobo I found on ebay would let me use the full 512mb, giving me a "memory upgrade" at the same time [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

This really sucks [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif] I was really hoping to give this a shot tonight [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]

Yeh... what you saw with the notch on the left is an AGP 2X card. The cards with two notches were designed for compatibility with AGP 2X slots. The notch to the right is for 4X and 8X but most 4X cards will have the left sided notch for compatibility. Now, the newer cards would have to be on a 4X or 8X slot. There are NO i440BX motherboards which support AGP 4X. Another thing about AGP cards, the KT333 chipset is the last to support the 3V cards, I have no idea for P$ boards though as I only build AMD. Also, I recently built a decent Athlon 1200 system for less than $200 with some help from friends and a few... er... shall we say, five finger discounts.
