US fighter fires on school
November 5, 2004 - 12:26PM

A National Guard F-16 fighter plane mistakenly fired off 25 rounds of ammunition at the Little Egg Harbour Intermediate School in South New Jersey overnight.

The pilot was meant to fire the rounds about five kilometres away at a military target range, Lieutenant-Colonel Roberta Niedt of the New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs told reporters in the Jersey shore township's police headquarters.

No-one was injured as school was out and a lone custodian was inside the building when the bullets hit.

Damage was minimal, with the non-exploding, 20 millimetre bullets leaving puncture marks in the school's roof and the asphalt outside the building.

The fighter jet was part of the 113th Wing, District of Columbia Air National Guard assigned to Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland.

An investigation was being conducted into how the pilot mistook the school, located on Frog Pond Road, for a target range.

It was at night. He must not have been paying attention. I bet he's embarrassed. Now I want to know whose bright idea it was to build a live fire range near a town.

Wow, it's funny how you base the intelligence of America's whole Armed Forces on one mistake.

5 kilometers isn't near, the last time I checked...in fact that's a few miles out. About 3-ish? If the pilot's missing by that much in the first place he shouldn't be flying period..

^ true that. Shooting at canadian forces, anyone?

Fighter pilots are pressured into taking reflex-enhancing drugs, which also impairs their judgement. I'll bet the ground support feels real safe knowing half the pilots are flying drunk.

That wasn't a mistake. It's the duty of every red blooded (and green blooded alien resident) American, to kill those monsters from the frigid wasteland of the north, who try to steal our sunshine to warm their igloos.

If you actually READ the article it said the Base had been used since WW2 and that the town was built up after that.

I'll make a more constructive comment this time:

So instead of saying "Wow, that guy sure is stupid for shooting a school" you're saying "They sure are dumb for building a school where some guy would be shooting" Do you not see the error in this?
2004-11-05, 11:58 AM #32
It is pretty dumb to build a school that close to a live fire range used by jets. 3 miles goes by pretty fast when you're traveling 400+ miles per hour.

2004-11-05, 12:01 PM #33
I do think that 5km (which is quite nicely a little over 3 mi) is far enough that a fighter pilot should be able to tell the difference between one and the other, even at night; that should be afar enough for one to safely build a town away from a standard firing range. Just remember, with small arms, there are firing ranges much closer to cities, and some inside of cities; they pose no real threat to the town.

2004-11-05, 12:01 PM #34
If your army is letting people into jets whose aim is off by -3 miles- then you have a bigger problem than bad city planning.

At 25,000 feet and 700mph at night, 3 miles really isn't that far.
2004-11-05, 12:32 PM #37
and how many billions do they spend on that targetting equipment for these monkeys to operate?
2004-11-05, 12:32 PM #38
I think the school may have been there first guys.
2004-11-05, 12:37 PM #39
I think the biggest thing that bugs me is people holding those in the government to such pathetically low standards.

Obi_Kwiet: I do know that flying in that jet fighter, the distance was but 15 seconds of straight flight at 700mph, but it was flying at 7000 feet, not the 25,000 cruising altitude you suggested. (as far as I know, guns are not fired at that altitude) That should've been plenty of buffer for the pilot to not mess up that badly; I'm the kind that isn't terribly forgiving for mistakes like this, which are of at least a moderate size. I know the military is only human, but isn't near-perfection what they're trying for?
