Ah... so that's the stuff you where asking for help about in the chat... not to shabby man you go yourself a nice set up there.
2004-11-07, 1:08 AM #3
I don't get it. Why do you need two screens to watch one movie?
2004-11-07, 1:29 AM #4
why not?
plus. It added visability so more people could watch the movie.

I was really liking that Donnie Darko, until it got to the end. The end completely ruined it for me. I don't think the movie deserves all of the hype it gets.

As for having two screens like that, it would distract me. I would fascinated by the fact that the top of the film is under the bottom. Think about it. That ****'s deep.

Well... the dual screens were partially for the novelty of it. But as dud can attest to, the dual screens also allow for more people to view the movie without anything blocking the screen.

Right now im using the giant tv to post on massassi and play Source :D

Agreed. The ending was what made it such a cult-classic.

Its kind of like Butterfly Effect, but better. It includes messed up teens, time travel, prediction of the future, etc. And of course a psychotic bunny rabbit who tells Donnie to burn things. There really isnt any good way to say whats its about in a paragraph or less, you just half to watch it.
2004-11-07, 7:26 PM #20
I got to rent this movie sometime.

I'm one of those people where I loved it until I found out my girlfriend's little sisters were into it. It ruined it for me because I thought *I* was such a Cult Classic-er and then I found out they sell it at Hot Topic....

Instead of being at the golf course, Donnie is in his bed when the engine hits. This sets things right. Donnie was meant to be killed there.

At the end you see Jim Cunningham crying. All of the people involved had some part in the events that occoured while Donnie was alive. Jim is crying because he realizes that he is a bad person. He kills himself by the end of that October. (The one that Donnie isnt alive for)
The following link provides more information.

Link contains spoilers as well. Don't click if you havent seen the movie.

What the deuce? Where did all that come from MBeggar?
2004-11-08, 5:24 PM #30
First of all, read the PDF I linked. I'm pretty sure that came off the official site. (Which is a big game you have to play to actually access the site)
It mentions the things about Jim Cunningham on the site.

Anyway about the golf course thing:
Think about it The first time the engine hit Donnie wasnt killed. This creates the tangent universe (yes thats what it is called, its in the soundtrack). The tangent universe is what Donnie's life would be like if he did live. However upon the creation of a tangent universe, it will destroy itself and everyone living in it within a certain time period. This explains Frank telling Donnie 28 days etc.
Donnie is able to essentially save the world by getting killed.

The ending is alot simpler to explain:
The movie ends on October 2 or something. They all wake up like nothing happened although a few of them still remember it. Jim is crying because he realizes what a horrible person he really is. The one thing that should really clue you in to them remembering slightly what happened is Frank. He touches the eye that was shot. Almost in disbelief.

If this doesnt convince you that they knew slightly what happened, then the part with Gretchen on her bike should. She said she didnt know him, but she did have some sort of connection to him.

That movie's got several of my favorite songs:

Echo and the Bunnymen- The Killing Moon
This one plays in the beginning when he's riding his bike through town

Joy Division- Love Will Tear Us Apart
This one plays during the sex scene

The Church- Under the Milky Way
I don't remember when this one plays.
It's not the side effects of cocaine, so then I'm thinking that it must be love
2004-11-09, 1:44 AM #32
That link certainly sheds a bit more light on the whole film, but couldn't they have put some more obvious clues in the film itself? The fire and water thing, how were we supposed to get that just from the film?

I'm all for having a richer tpaestry than just the film, but I hate it when you can't understand the film without it. A film should be able to stand on its own, IMO.

apparantly the director's cut includes extracts from the philosophy of time travel from time-to-time.

A psychotic bunny telling him to burn things? Are you serious? How come I never really heard of this movie? Is it like "Equilibrium" in the sense that it wasn't opened in alot of theaters?
2004-11-09, 5:47 PM #36
No, it was even less advertised than Equilibrium
2004-11-09, 6:09 PM #37
Equilibrium is the poor man's Matrix.
