How good are Western Digital HDs?

I ask for a good reason. Right at this moment, I'm copying all my data from my old Seagate HD to a new 80GB WD HD. Before I format my old drive, I'd like to get a poll going of how reliable you've found WD.

I've had one for about 2 years, another for about 4 months. Neither has ever crashed and lost my data.

I think I have one. It works.

Also, do I need to take any extra cooling measures with a 7200 RPM drive? It runs noteably warmer than my old drive.

[edit: copy all done, I'm running solely off the new drive right now. Noteable increase in my startup speed. Yays! :D ]

I had three maxtor HDDs die in a span of six-eight months. I've had a WD for a year and a half since then with flawless performance.

So, I like it.

Yeah, I got a 160GB WD 7200RPM with 8MB of cache, and it has run flawlessly since I got it last Christmas.

Never had a problem with WD, so I will rate it "The bestest" but whatever you do don't get Maxtor. (Seagates are also very good)

Of all the hard drives Ive ever used, the only ones that have up and failed on me were WDs.

What would you recommend then Geebeekay?

Maxtor, Seagate, Samsung, etc...

Same here. I've had Seagate, Fujitsu, Maxtor and WD, and the only ones that crapped out on me were the WD's (I had 2). Bad sectors started showing up out of the blue, and before I knew it, nothing readable was left on the drive.

I've used Seagate, WD, and Maxtor, Seagate's are reliable, but a little bit loud. I bought a Maxtor, it died several hours after installation, got another one, died a few days after installation, bought a WD and have had no problems 1.5 years later. I've had my Seagate even longer, but I've heard more positive reviews of WD, so yarr, take it as you will.

I've had an 8 gb maxtor for 6 years ( have it hooked up in my comp right now as extra storage, as a matter of fact) and I haven't had it lose data on me yet. I had it stored in a box for about 4 years, and when I plugged it back in, all my old data was still on it.

For every person that says WD sucks and are the only drives that have failed on them, you'll find someone to say the opposite. People who say "omg I had a WD drive on me die so WD sucks" are complete morons. I don't care if you've had six die on you, you seem to forget the concept of mass production.

Millions of people use them, they are put in all sorts of retail and built to order machines, they're used in servers, and they work fine...Never listen to people's sob stories with hard drives.

But here's the question: Did you buy them all from the same dealer? Or if you ordered them directly from WD, did they use the same shipping service? When replacing a new defective product, you need to keep these things in mind, too.

Indeed. I've had this one near four years, nothing has failed on it yet. (A bit loud, though.)

I've had my WD 40 gig hard drive for several years now. No problems.

Never had a problem with WD, but I would only buy Seagates from now on, simply for the 10 year warranty.

Also, some Maxtor drives neglect to put jumper settings on the casing, so if you have no manual, it's rather frustrating.

I have a WD400 and a WD300. 70GBs of storage woohoo! Anyway, I've had no problems and so far WD has treated me well.

I'm getting a lot more Windows errors than before...

Although it may have something to do with the fact that my other drive had three partitions and two compressed drives. I have a *lot* of shortcuts to update. :(

And I decided to format my old drive. [insert dramatic music]
Also did a surface scan on both drives (took hours). Both are completely perfect. The old one gets to go into a USB HD case, and store my music. CDs are for chumps, anyway. :p Also might save some music-related software on it.

I have a Maxtor and it hasn't been a problem at all.

I have two 120 GB Seagates running in RAID, a 40 GB WD drive, a 80 GB WD drive, a 40 GB Quantum drive (either that or it's a Maxtor), and another 10 GB Maxtor. All of them seem to work, but I happen to like Seagate and WD.

I had an 80GB Caviar drive... didnt even last a year, then i bought a 120GB maxtor diamondmax 9 (i think) and its been fine for well over a year, and still going. (under pretty heavy use mind you, i format almost annually, plus the major file moving ect.)

Overall from what I've heard and researched (which I did recently when I was about to buy my new hard drive), I've heard that Seagate is the best, WD is nearly as good, and Maxtor you should stay away from...

I did have a WD die on me once, but I'm pretty sure that was teh fault of my power supply which spiked and killed some stuff on my motherboard, one of my DVD drives, and the WD hard drive. Since then I got a Seagate Barricuda Serial ATA 160gb drive to replace the one that was fried (60 gb Western Digital), and the new one has been awesome. No problems (though I've only had it for like a month now), and it runs FAST.

The moral of my story:

You did good. :)
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

Yeah..I think my 30gb drive is a WD -- haven't had any problems.

I like Maxtor, though..

Of course, keep in mind that all of us have had varried experiences... I've used well over a dozen different hard drives, and the only reason I've ever gotten a new one was because either I was building a new computer, or the old one was too small. I've used Hitachi, Maxtor, WD, and perhasp some others. All of them seem to have worked rather well.

I've only ever had 3 HD's fail, and they were all three WD's. Keep in mind though that this was in ~1994
