Damn AOL.

At least I have yet to find any problems with version 5 so I'm contempt with using it for a looooong time.

Although there is only so much you can do with an MP3 player, they really did a lot. Now its up to the users to make awesome plugins and keep it alive.

And failing that there's always foobar2000 :)

I haven't seriously used Winamp in almost a year and a half, so I can't really say this bothers me much.

Really? I can't even make myself like WM - let alone use it well...

...I'm using iTunes mainly now because I bought an iPod so it makes sense, but I do love foobar and winamp too.

Being a Linux-only geek, I cant say this will affect me personally . . . but damn. :(

Just one more reason to hate AOL. Anyone up for beating the crap out of some AOL executive's car?

I've been meaning to try Winamp again. MusicMatch just isn't cutting it any more for some reason.

I could never tolerate iTunes. It's just not visually appealing. While some may not see that as an important issue, I tend to lean towards programs that both work great and look great. Winamp is both of these things.

I've always liked winamp b/c of its plugins, especially Enhancer.

It makes mp3s sound a lot better.

Damn, that is sad. I love winamp :(

Winamp > Every other media player.

I like iTunes a lot also, but I feel that Winamp handles 6500 songs better.

D***it! First Netscape, now WinAmp! (the only decent audio player I've ever seen) Curses to AOL! I say we storm the headquarters building, and burn it to the ground! Death to AOL! Death to the AOL users! Unite with me, Massassi, and we will rid the world of this scourge!

I loved WinAMp, until it started acting up and not functioning anymore recently.
2004-11-11, 12:57 PM #22
:(

I seriously have been using Winamp since before they signed with AOL. I love it, always have, so compact, ran so well on every system I had it on, and I've had a P100. It'll still live, at least you can still get the versions at oldversion.com, but the fact that you can't get any updates to it saddens me.

I've been using every version of Winamp since 1.x, even the god-awful version 3.

It's times like these I'm glad I use open-source software. The nice thing about open source is that when some people who have been working on it decide to quit or go elsewhere, anyone else can take up the code and keep it going.

There are calls on the news website for AOL to make it open.

Let me ask you this: how do you spell phat tchans?
2004-11-11, 5:25 PM #30
Well I know I'm really going to miss what was at the heart of WinAmp... :(. Quite frankly, as far as WMP is concerned, I preferred (and still use) mplayer2.exe for exactly the same reason that I enjoy using WinAmp - it's compact yet also uncluttered (basically it does everything you need it to).

I will confess that as far as alternatives go, I'm more and more tempted by iTunes, but I just can't bring myself to install it and replace my love for WinAmp. Heck, for the longest time imaginable, I was using v2.666 (bless those days of simplicity *ends nostaligic moment*...), as v3 just struck me as a huge joke - WinAmp had improved with each release prior to that awful incarnation and I dare say that that release lost it many of its fans :o.

What with Sonique out of the picture now too (I always loved their visualisations :D), t'is a sad day to see such promising software head in this direction. Truth be told, many of the same things could be said about other software: Napster in its prime being arguably the best example, spawned from a fantastic "free" idea.... but I digress... (legalities aside) ;)

Just my two humble pennies worth :D

-Jackpot

PS: Yes, I'm currently using WinAmp v5 (only for upgrades and patches more than functionality)... but it's just not 2.666 ;)
