Transcript of a MSN conversation that I am having with someone who *thinks* she knows what she is talking about on the subject of chemistry...

Quote:
Kyle says:
you know what's really funny? how nitrogen is supposed to be an "inert gas" and yet all high explosives are based on nitrogen

B says:
nitrogen is not an inert gas

Kyle says:
sorry, "non-reactive"

B says:
what are you talking about

Kyle says:
plus, noble gas != inert gas

Kyle says:
im talking about how nitrogen is non-reactive, and yet all high explosives are nitrogen-based

Kyle says:
i thought that was pretty clear

B says:
it is highly electronegative

Kyle says:
in its monatomic form, sure

B says:
hydrogen nitrogen bond is very very strong

B says:
it is hydrogen bond!

Kyle says:
but N2 is pretty inert, wouldn't you say?

B says:
no

Kyle says:
...

B says:
it's poisonous

B says:
therefore not nonreactive

Kyle says:
riiiiiight....

Kyle says:
and that's why it comprises 75% of the atmosphere...

B says:
?

B says:
wait, isn't nitrogen gas brown?

Hmm... I have one thing to say to this right now, possibly more later:

LOL.

Offer her a vial of Chlorine gas and tell her to inhale deeply.

Problem solved.

This brings me to the question why nitrogen gas would be, all of a sudden, a conversational topic?

Even better, mix it with some amonia.

It's funny because neither of you have any idea what you're talking about.

Oh, and scientists have been able to create artificial reactions involving inert gases. That's why they aren't called inert anymore. :eng101:

The role of nitrogen in "high explosives" is often just to store oxygen. It's in an oxidized form NO3. It's only unstable enough to turn the oxygen over to carbon in the explosive, like in Nitroglycerine or Trinitrotoluene (TNT) (familiar names for everybody, I trust), and many other explosives, like your old good buddy Gunpowder, which contains potassium nitrate, KNO3, for the oxygen and Charcoal for "fuel", unoxidized carbon, that is.

As you all know, for an explosive to be effective, it must contain in its own composition the oxygen it needs. Gettin the oxygen from the surrounding atmosphere is far too slow, and would only result in burning, not an explosion.

AS I had said, she was lost on the subject, from the moment you lied aboiut "all high explosives are based on nitrogen." She'd never make it in such a geeky world as Massassi, where we all know (or should, that is) that the primary element for fueling massive bombs is alluminum.

Haha, what a great place Massassi is... No matter how much you think you know, there's always someone here who thinks they know more....

As far as aluminum goes; yes, I realize that high explosives can be something other than nitrogen based (especially those lovely fuel-air bombs), but I wanted to talk about nitrogen.

As for why I wanted to talk about nitrogen, well... that's a question that I don't think will ever be answered (only because I have no idea why I would suddenly start talking about random elements).

I don't think anybody has mentioned this before, but I did want to say that Kyle was right about at least one thing. Nitrogen, (N2 form), does comprise a majority of the atmospheric composition. It is reactive as you thought, and the brown gas is Nitrogen oxide. NO2 I believe. Just an FYI

The BLU-82B "Daisy Cutter" and MOAB are not fuel-air bombs; they have their own oxider contained within them, and a primary active element of their fuel is alluminum, which I believe is more present than the level of Nitrogen used. (and the nitrogen alone is worthless, and only useful when combined to make compounds such as the TNT in the MOAB, or the Ammonium Nitrate in the MOAB, whereas both contain fairly pure alluminum) Also note that apparently from the first link, EBay has daisy cutters for sale. :D

[edit: I'm not trying to say you are completely wrong in everything you said, but I am correcting you in claiming that high explosives are based on Nitrogen. Rather, high explosives have a nitrogen-containing compound as a key material for the fuel.]
