Microsoft Windows Update CD Rant

I'll begin about 2 months ago.

On Feburary 24th in the Massassi chat, the discussion at one point turned towards this wonderful and completely free CD that Microsoft was willing to ship to you. I hadn't heard about it, so I checked it out and ordered one that day. Two weeks go by. I've heard NOTHING about this CD other than the confirmation email I got saying my order was recieved. So I go to their support site to inquire about my order only to find... It's Backordered. WTF? If it's backordered, shouldn't I be NOTIFIED of this? Especially if it was backordered BEFORE my order was placed. So I get over it and continue to wait. March 24th rolls around. FINALLY I get another email from Microsoft telling me my order has been shipped. When can I expect it? Three to eight business days depending on location. I'm going to guess it's being shipped from Washington. I live in North Carolina. It has been FIFTEEN days now since I got this message. FIFTEEN! I know it doesn't take this long to get a CD from there to here. Where in the name of hell is my bloody CD?! I've checked the shipping address over and over again. It's the right address. I'm seriously very annoyed now. I mean, I'm getting EXACTLY what I paid for, NOTHING. I paid nothing, I've gotten nothing.

So, I think a few other people here may have ordered one around this time. Have any of you gotten it yet? Any ideas what I should do other than raise hell with them? I know for a fact I'm never buying ANY product from them off the internet now that involves the actual transfer of money, they can't seem to handle one little CD that costs nothing.

This is really funny and ironic, because mine just came in the mail today. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

When I ordered it, I fully expected it to take at least a month to arrive. I mean come on... it was free, with free shipping. And it contains content that you can download anyways.

Thats the point. It cost nothing. They aren't going to spend more money on timely overnight delivery on something that they are losing money on already, since they provide it to you for free.

The ironic thing is, you could have downloaded all the updates by now.

Free = slow.

So by the time you actually receive the CD, it will be horribly outdated.

It took about 4 weeks, but it's worth having. It has directx 9.0b, IE 6 SP1, and WMP 9 on the cd.

Lets see here...

Let's say the CD is packed full to 700MB of stuff.

Let's say you have a good 56K connection, and are getting 5KB/s. Not the best, but decent enough.

To download 700MB at 5 KB/s, it would take 143360 seconds. That's 2,389 minutes, or ~40 hours, or 1.659 days.

So instead of just downloading all of it in one and a half days, you decided to wait a whole month... hrmm....

... I ordered the CD (which took about a month to ship and everything) because it meant that I wouldn't have to trawl through the Microsoft site just to find a distrbutable service pack.

That's assuming you stay connected. Chances are on 56k, you'd get kicked off/lose connection during that time.

Ok, fine. Say that you do get kicked off a bunch of times. But you HAVE resume, because its pretty much standard for every system nowadays. So extend that estimate to a generous 2 days, compared to 4 weeks.

I could have downloaded it, yes. But I happen to like to do other things when I'm online. Downloading that would hog the hell out of my bandwidth. Add that to the fact that I find it impossible to find ANYTHING on their website and, for me, it equates to more frustration than I want to deal with. Waiting 3 months for a stupid CD is slightly less frustrating, but if what was said to be on it is ALL that's on it, I don't really want it anyway. I don't ever use IE anymore, I have DX 9.0b, and I never ever want to touch WMP. In my opinion, it sucks bad. I'll stick with Media Player Classic.
