Awesome

Now I'm gonna go play! :D

The HL Source unlock crack didn't work for me tho, I'll try fiddling with it later.

YOU ALL LIE SO BAD! Talk of warez and illegal cracks is...errr illegal! So, stop...unless you tell me >.> <.<

I can't play it anyway (if that is real...which it isn't!...I hope) because I bought it through Steam.
Think while it's still legal.
2004-11-13, 8:21 PM #6
I bought it through Steam. I hear the retail version installs the same way as the Steam one (ie it installs Steam and the HL2 content, while if you buy it through steam it just downloads the content, same thing).

2004-11-13, 8:25 PM #7
It should cost approximately $1570 dollars for me to be able to play HL2... $1500 for a good new computer and $70 for the game. :( :(
DO NOT WANT.
2004-11-13, 9:20 PM #8
But I want to play too!! Help. :(

Oh, by the way, I'm buying a new video card. Any recommendations? (If anyone says an X800, I'll kill them)

Hmm crap, I don't think my computer will be able to handle it now with everyone talking liks this.

I figured if I could run CS:Source find I would be all set...Isn't half life 2 .. .source..?
2004-11-13, 10:11 PM #14
Yeah, but HL2 levels are bigger and more detailed than CS:S levels (of course, since it's SP). I can run CS:S with some of the settings on medium (rest on low) for a 60fps, but my FPS is halved in some areas in HL2. Still, 30 is bearable.

2004-11-13, 10:14 PM #15
So what IS the minimum requirements suggested for the game? After I install anew video card, I'm confident my computer (which has only cost some $600US so far) will be able to play it well. It's amazing how much money you save when you don't worry about having a "modded" case, or replacing your current "peripherials".

A three-month-old computer that cost four thousand dollars? you need to realize that perhaps performance is more important than the computer's case and parts looking good. :p

As for the cards, are you simply an NVidia fanboy? Tsk, tsk, as the only NVidia card for HL2 I could possibly reccomend is the 6800GT, though reccomend it a lot I would, if you have that much cash to spare. (6800U, despite being more powerful, has many things that make it not worth it) However, if the reason is because you don't have $500-550Us to plunk down on a new card, then that's another story. Unfortunately for the NVidia fanboys out there, the GEforce FX 5xxx cards can't compete with the Radeon 9x00 cards. For ~$150, go for the Radeon 9600XT, or ~$200 for the 9800 Pro, which is rumored to be virtually the same as the 9800XT, once you add some tweaks.

Well I got everything is on high or medium for me, and I have no problems whatsoever. So I should be all set?

And comeone, at least tell us how you did it.

Did you need to set up a proxy on your computer and an alrgerithm for decryption to fake steam into authorizing it?

Or what?

Perhaps I should clarify: First, it's four thousand Canadian. Second, this includes the cost of the X800 that I bought back in September that I still don't have (it's been long enough that the price has actually gone down - it was $700 Canadian when I bought it). And this computer does have quite good performance (the Athlon 64 3400+ and 1.5 gigs of RAM ensure that), but the GeForce 2 that's filling in is woefully inadequate for HL2. Doom 3 is barely playable.

So I'm not an nVidia fanboy, I'm just worried that if I order another card from ATI, it'll take just as long as the X800.

Whether or not this is true or not, but basically if your comp can play HL than it can play HL2. The only difference is how high your graphic settings will be.

Okay, sorry about my mistake. Since I've already decided that the x800 is too expensive for my tastes, I haven't studdied much about how long it takes to get one. Perhaps you might've had better luck buying one on EBay, but oh well...

$4,000C? That's what, about $3,300US? That's still quite a bit. But looking at those, your computer looks in a condition eerily similar to mine, with an Athlon 64, plenty of RAM, and a badly out-dated video card. (but I'm stuck with a Radeon 7000, which is worse, having no pixel shader capabilities...)

However, if you have the money to spend on just about any new video card, try searching EBay for one. Just be careful to make sure it's a legitimate sale; make sure you examine to see that the seller is good, and all that online auction advice crap. an X800XT PE will probably be abit more expensive on there, though, but it's your best bet if you still want that card, and want to recieve it before it's outdated. Otherwise, the X800 Pro and 6800GT aren't anywhere near as over-demanded, and are cheaper to boot.

If that's not the case, $180(canadian) would be enough for a 9600XT. It's highly underrated, getting plenty of good performance. If you play without Anti-aliasing, it will play games for the next 2 or so years with maxed settings, getting 60fps, I bet, particuarly with the rest of the machinery you've got.

Let's see... What's that minimum specs for Half-Life? If I recall correctly, it's a Pentium 200MHz, 32MB RAM, and no video acceleration required. Believe me, that won't play Half-Life 2, and I don't have to try it to find out. However, if you were trying to get at the fact that brand-new games like this are quite playable without having to steal technology from 4 years into the future, you are correct. Even when Doom3 hit the shelves, you could use a Radeon 9800XT, max the settings, and still get 60fps. I imagine that those of us who've got an Athlon 64 to do our bidding are quite in the clear, as soon as we do something about these horribly outdated video cards...

Really, having "secrets" such as this is really immature and stupid. I hate when people do stupid **** like this. "Lol, I have something, and I'll show it to you, but I won't say how BECAUSE I'M AN ARSE, LOL!!!!"

I don't even have the game, so it doesn't apply to me. But really, when this kinda idiocy is pulled, it irks me. Let the toddler keep his secret and play his game now, we all will be able to play it eventually anyway.

2 years? Maybe 2 months. I seriously think you're doing crack with this one. It's a good card, yes, but max settings for 2 years and constant 60 fps? Get your head checked, man. I doubt even my GT will last that long.

Kyle, I've said it once, I'll say it a million times--get a 6800GT. They're 100 dollars less expensive (American), they are easy to get, and they even perform better on some games. There's no reason to stick with the X800XT that you ordered, unless you want to get it around the time DNF is released.

Yoshi's right. No way in hell is my 9600xt going to play games at maxed out qualities (at 60fps as you said) in the next two years. It plays CS:S perfectly fine, will be great at HL2, eases its way through Doom 3, but anything more taxing than that will probably bring it to its knees.

Not that I care. HL2 and CS:S will keep me busy for quite a long time, as will PoP:WW.

Athlon XP 2000+
256Mb DDR RAM
GeForce2 MX 32Mb

Unless they've done some serious de-optimisation since the Alpha, yep. I played through most levels (actually got a small portion of the storyline - spoilers anyone?) and only on wide open areas, or looking down on areas from cliffs etc did any serious damage to the framerate.

The Source engine is amazing.
