Intel Pentium M vs. Intel Pentium 4

Which would you choose. I have a choice (sortof) between a 3 Ghz Pentium 4 or a 1.6 Ghz Pentium M. Yes, I am choosing a notebook.

What is up with the Mobile Technology? What is the comparison between the two?

Mobile CPU's are designed to run at a very low VCore. Default CPU's (like the Pentium 4) run at 1.65VCore. This eats up battery, and makes a huge amount of heat.

The Pentium Mobile most likely runs at 1.45Vcore, and is designed to conserve battery power.

I've noticed that even a 500Mhz laptop CPU, runs faster than a 1.0 Ghz regular CPU.

Laptops are designed for Mobile CPUs, so I would take the mobile over the Pentium 4.

performance:

3.0 gHz P4:----------
1.6 gHz PM:----

Battery life:
3.0 gHz P4:-
1.6 gHz PM:----------

I'd say eta on battery life with a full blown P4 in it would be about 2.5 hours, where the PM could easily last anywhere between 4 and 10 hours depending on the use.

It really depends on what you want to do with it. for just ordinary stuff and most games, not he newer resource hogs like Farcry, go with the mobile. however, if you want a gaming machine, like, say, The Area-51M, go with the P4

Ok so, given that, just exactly what laptop manufacturers would you guys recommend.
I can only think of Dell, HP, and IBM. Alienware is not an option, unless the price is in this price-range: $1,000 to $1,600.

Actually, the last time I checked, I thought the Alienware laptop was actually cheaper than Alienware is...

Hell, just look online. For 929 you can get a small laptop (12.1in Display), ATI Mobile Radeon 9600, 512MB RAM, DVD-Rom. Then again, this is if you want a small screen, which is what I would recommend if you are truly going to use your laptop as a laptop. A small laptop is a lot easeir to carry around than a 17" Widescreen Toshiba or whatever.

I hear that Dell is among the most stable of systems, and their parts last longer. I also seem to recall hearing that they don't use proprietary parts.

But this is just what I've heard. I don't have a Dell... yet.

Dont belive everything you hear.

I usually don't.

[I might have actually been thinking of a different system, though.]

http://www.fujitsu-siemens.com/rl/products/index.html#

had three or four friends who have fujitsu-siemens laptops, used them myself, they have always found them to be reliable and able to play games.....

you'll be dealing with the amercian versions but there shouldn't be much of a difference...worth a look either way.
