Famous/important modders

I need the infamous Massassi help for school. I'd doing a final project in History and Theory of Interactive Art, and I could use your suggestions for modders (people who have made modifications/total-partial conversions) who are famous and/or have made an important imact on the gaming community. A prime example would be Minh Le and Jess Cliffe of Counter-Strike (whether you like the mod or not is moot in this case). Links and whatnot would be most beneficial as well. Thanks for your time and effort :)

Hell yeah! I'd be interested in doing any Massassians too -- only thing is, I need to be able to show the proffessor something of a portfolio page or the like... what other interactive art works (mods, in this case) they've done. Well, it might not be required, but it'd sure be helpful to be able to say what they've done :)

That would be Minh Le, the example I gave in my first post.

Links with his bio/portfolio would be helpful too :)

SavageX and Ryan (of commandchamber.net fame) have been mentioned in gaming magazines for their work in the JK Moding community.

Also, the Day of Defeat team deserves a mention as well... DoD pretty much started the whole WW2 FPS craze, and many of the team members got hired by Valve to continue working on the mod when they acquired it.

Just so you all know (and so I have easy reference), I posted/linked my question presented on this thread to the forums on The Admiral's Command Center (TACC) and Gaming Guardians (a forum dedicated to the webcomic of the same name and to text-based/pen-and-paper-like RPs in general).

Don't feel shy and modest, you famous Massassians! Speak up! You might be my shining hope for this class :)

Threewave/CCTF (check staff page for contributors)
Rocket Arena (click team for contributors)
JailBreak (team listed on main)
Action Quake 2 (check contact page for contributors)

Those are 4 very famous mods, and all of them just so happen to kick major ***. I'd post more, but I must run to class here in a sec...

Oh yeah... I should note that I'm not the only one who'd thank you guys -- I got 2 other people in my group for this project. They'd thank you too :)

And I need people, as in ones I can call artists (designers, modellers, etc.), not the mods themselves. Or rather, people first, their works second ;) Thanks anyway MZZT.

Something NOT from FPS would be cool too. The more variety the better.

ydnar, and others who made ET. I guess it's actually a game, but maybe it's just a mod. But... I don't think they were paid...?

Anyway: www.splashdamage.com for themses.

That's Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory for those who aren't 'in the know' so to speak.

The geezer that Made Jed.

Don't really think I deserve mention. I know people enjoyed my levels, but they didn't exactly reek of professionalism (DAK's voice acting aside).

But doesn't he now work for Lucasarts? I thought that he was looking for "ameteur" people, not people who are no professional. (The onlky ameteur work of Yves's that came to anything was DFUSE and its successor WDFUSE, the only real editors for Dark Forces)

The guy behind Counter-strike was amateur, but now he works for Value, so no, they don't have to be stictly so.

Thats not entirely true. Yves continued to make custom maps for the JK Community even after he was hired by LucasArts. He used an assumed name though, CogKing I think it was.

Yep.

You should definately talk to ydnar. His Q3Map2 compiler has completely revived all Q3 based games. Maps can be bigger, more complex, compiles are hundreds of times faster, very advanced lighting (bump mapping, radiosity, penumbra shadows (where shadows lose focus with distance from the object). A well made Q3 map can rival and even exceed games like HL2 in static image quality (note STATIC, you're not able to have moving lights like Doom 3). You could catch him on irc.telefragged.net in #QERadiant. Maybe it's .com, not sure. Many of the other QER staff are there often as well.

Hell Raiser and Shred18 of the TDiR MPTC.

Unfortunately their work doesn't get nearly the amount of recognition it deserves, since it's for JK.

TDiR is the first complete TC ever put out for JK, to the best of my knowledge.

You might be looking for bigger names in general, but in case you are interested, you can have a look also here:

http://www.jakekeating.com/thesis/

Jake "Clu" Keating's Colosseum was probably the most acclaimed total conversion for Jedi Outcast. It was his thesis work. Well, you you can find more info from the web site. He could probably provide you with even more info, for he's a really cool guy. Though no doubt he is very busy. After graduation, he's been working for Terminal Reality, or at least was when I last time talked with him, though that was a year ago...
