Why Smallpox?
2004-04-12, 4:35 PM #1
My mom hired a 16 year old Mexican guy to work with me in the yard over spring break, and I noticed that he had the same kind of scar on his arm that my parents do from getting the smallpox vaccine. I asked him about it and he said that it was indeed a smallpox vaccination. Now, I thought that the disease was eradicated and that the general public wasn't getting vaccines anywhere any more. Does anyone have any idea why he would have gotten it?

Smallpox has been mostly eradicated. there were still small samples left afterwards for laboratory reasons, and as such could stilleb accessed by someone with the right credentials. the current scare about a smallpox outbreak is in conjunction with terrorists. it would make an almost perfect weapon, as the vaccine for it it almost non-existant at this point as it has not been needed in many years. however, most people realize how small a chance of this actually happening are.

Yeah, I know that they have samples in Atlanta and in Moscow.
The guy said that he got it when he was real little, so he would have probably gotten it in some clinic in Mexico.

Actually the real scare is a new starin of smallpox that's evolved to weasel it's way past the vaccination.

Supposedly the container that holds the small pox virus is moved around the building constantly, under guard, several locks and keys, and only a few people know where it is at any given time.

I also heard something about these two scientists altering the DNA of some strain of pox (possibly mouse), and it caused it to kill all the vaccinated, as well as the unvaccinated.

Yeah! And I heard there was this genetically engineered strain that eats through metal and can kill you across the room by firing a laser beam at you!

I heard of that as well, but i'm not sure if that was pox or the flu. Either way, i beieve they destroyed all samples of that.

Does this kind of scenario make anybody else think of the Stand?

I understand it sounds ridiculous, but I got several pages about it on google: http://www.backwoodshome.com/articles2/duffy81b.html

They inserted the gene interleukin-4 into the mousepox virus, then exposed mice previously vaccinated against mousepox to the genetically altered virus. As they feared, many of the mice died. They are not sure if a genetically altered smallpox virus would defeat the smallpox vaccine, but it is definitely a fear.</font>

My favorite man-made virus is Ebolapox, an oh-so-fun combination of Ebola and smallpox. You break out in pock marks all over and hemorrhage so much that you bleed out of every orifice simultaneously. Yay!

And if that’s not enough to make you feel all happy inside, just remember kids… back in the day the Soviet Union had questionable security when it came to their samples of smallpox, so who knows how many samples might be out there now! Double yay! [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

Does anyone else find it fascinating that he felt the need to mention that the hireling was Mexican? I find it very interesting.
