Would LEC care?

Would LEC care if I distributed copies of JK.exe for free? :o

With the way gaming technology has advanced, I'd say the 1st SITH engine is as good as abandonware.

What's the risk?

Well, I managed to snag a copy in some obscure little bargain bin a couple of years ago, but you'd have to pay up big time to get it from me....

There's really no such thing as abandoneware, and distrubuting games is really only safe if the major companies involved are dead.

Exactly. JK isn't abandonware yet, because LEC is still selling it! It'll be a good few years yet before it's completely forgotten.

Instead of distributing the modified executable itself, distribute a script that will modify the executable on the fly....
And when the moment is right, I'm gonna fly a kite.

I am suprised that LEC still has copies of JK around their warehouses.

Go ahead and distribute. I don't think you would be seen, considering that JK doesn't sell in significant quantity anymore.

This is LEC we're talking about. You'd have lawyers swarming all over you within a week!
Life is beautiful.

Has anybody actually asked LEC about modifying the JK.exe, and got an answer back? Maybe there's some kind of price (albeit, most likely a ludicrous one) like there is to edit and distribute the Quake 3 engine.

Either way, asking the company if they care what you do to their game engine is probably a better idea than asking a community of editors.

You would be set upon by a hungry pack of crack corporate lawyers, who would not only sue your pants off but manage to impound your car and force a prison sentence on you.

I still think it would be funny to see LEC's resopnse, though. :p

Wouldn't it make more sense to use a better engine made specifically for creating games, like 3D RAD, or better yet Conitec 3D Game Studio / A6?

Both have pretty good shading, but 3D Game Stuiod looks way better.

Of course, I'm only comparing screenshots, which is probably a bit biased. I've tried 3D RAD, it's meh. It runs surprisingly smooth, even on 500 MHz machine, but seems a bit difficult to figure out a lot of things (particularly in the area of customization). Honestly, I haven't experimented with it that much. Haven't tried 3D Game Studio at all (although I have it). Just haven't gotten around to installing it.

Of course, neither of these are free, but all updates to 3D RAD are free once you buy the engine.

Pfft. As soon as I get my CS degree I'm gonna write one *****in' game engine.

Which will be no better than the SITH engine
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

I have a copy at home somewhere me thinks. Actually, my brother was playing it a few weeks back.

Martyn, hope you're watching 'cause this ends in under two hours.

Bought my copy there for $7 over a year ago. If you miss this one, another cheap copy will show up soon I'm sure.

I don't think ANY LEC software is abandonware.
I can't think of anything to put here right now.

*bumpper dooby doo!*

I came to check the vote count/bump this thread, and happend to read what _XxCRiMSoNxX_ had said about the hex edited jk.exe's lying about.

Well.... it's not Jedi Knight the game that would be distributed. I think LEC would get awfully peterbed about that more than just the engine exe. After all, what good is the engine exe alone unless you already own JK? Thats where mods come in, and if LEC would care if people played a mod that runs off of JK.exe alone, and included 100% original files.

And what about the Internet Privacy Act? Couldn't someone theoretically cover themselves with that to prevent LEC from even entering the site offering said mod with JK.exe included?

[Hmm, 1/4th say they wouldn't care. Y'know, I honestly thought it'd be lower than that.]

That internet privacy act doesn't protect against things like that, people who made those disclaimers on the frontpage of their site aren't protecting anything they do. It's just a misinterpitation of the law by some kid making some mod, and since then, everyone thinks it makes them suddenly higher above the law. It doesn't work, and will never work: if it's illegal, they will charge you.
