I would LOVE to try linux, however I cannot as I do not have the CD burning capabilities like most of you :(

Eventually I will get around to trying Debian or Mandrake, but it will probably be during the holidays.

i installed my first redhat dostro (6.x) from the HDD. i forget how exactly but it asked me where i wanted to install from and i told it and it did it. :/

updating servers for apt can't be that tedious. i updated the server list file for yum and it had about 15 different servers on it. took about 30 minutes to search and update. i only had to do it once.

You can install from the HDD, or even make a floppy boot disk and have it installed from the internet.. there's a Linux option for everyone!! :D

Sorry for the lousy German

amaroK, the (new) official KDE audio player supports gapless playback. And its not a hack.

Oh, and its kickass!
And when the moment is right, I'm gonna fly a kite.

Gapless playback is playback without annoying audible gaps between tracks, like live CDs, or any tricks that involve fading them into each other and fiddling to find the correct settings

Martyn is currently downloading the newest available knoppix for when my WinXP goes **** up! I realised the last version I burned came out before my new wireless t'internet card, so a 2004 version would be much more useful! ;)

I am total linux noob, so I can't really discuss with you if apt-get or emerge is better... but I just love this:

Code:
matyx root # emerge -s amaroK
Searching...
[ Results for search key : amaroK ]
[ Applications found : 1 ]

*  media-sound/amarok
      Latest version available: 1.0.2
      Latest version installed: [ Not Installed ]
      Size of downloaded files: 1,993 kB
      Homepage:    http://amarok.sourceforge.net/
      Description: amaroK is a media player for KDE
      License:     GPL-2

matyx root # emerge -av amarok

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild  N    ] media-sound/amarok-1.0.2  +arts -cjk -debug -gstreamer +opengl -xine -xinerama +xmms 1,993 kB

Total size of downloads: 1,993 kB

Do you want me to merge these packages? [Yes/No] yes
>>> emerge (1 of 1) media-sound/amarok-1.0.2 to /

And when I have a long download I can resume it :))
Does a good use of the USE flags bring perfomance? (Like when using kde only compile everything with the flag -gnome ?)
