1280x1024 6xAA 16xAF all sigttings as high as the directx mode will allow

DX7
DX8
DX9

didn't bother with separate dx8.0 and 8.1 shots since i noticed no difference at all between the modes

ok maybe not... but i'd rather take DX7 at the settings in the comparison shot then dx9 with the settings in those 10 shots... i mean 1280x1024 6xAA 16xAF > 640x480 0xAA Bilinear no matter what DX mode you use

I can run DirectX9 on my GeforceFX 5900 (thanx the -dctx 90 thing or something like that) with pretty decent framerate through out (60-80fps) however the thing that completely screws it up is the invisible water (apparently the FX won't render the water in DirectX 9 mode..... hope Nvidia fixes this soon). If it wasn't for that one reason i would always run in DirectX9 mode instead of just using 8.1 with full AA and Anistropic filtering (it looks too clean).

Oh yeah, theres nothing like running everything at the highest it goes.
It's like all my christmas' and birthdays come at once...
Which is technically true cuz my parents actually got me this kickass pc as a christmas/birthday present. They say this covers presents for the next two years, I think its worth it :D

Try AF. Once you use it, you realize how awesome it is. Specially in FPS'. :)

Especially with the water in HL2. It looks like crap (comparitively speaking) with trilinear.

No AA
6 x AA

AA x 6, DX9, Trillinear, High detail

The only weird thing is, when I turned on AA x 6, the game ran just as smooth as it did without any AA at all (just about...maybe a BIT slower, but nothing major)...weird, but awesome. The other thing is, now characters mouths don't move! AHH! I hear them talking, and there facial expressions change, but their mouths don't move at all....weird. The reason I was afraid to use AA, is because FarCry runs amazing on my PC, but when you turn on AA x 2 it suddenly runs like crap, so I expected HL2 to do the same thing...surprisingly it didn't.
Think while it's still legal.

Yeah it runs supprisenly well with AA and AF at full (thats the way i run it and notice no hit at all in framerate). IF people are getting the stutter problem (due to texture loads) will be happy to find out this is not a technical nor GPU problem and will be hopefully fixed tommorow via steam.

How does one ascertain what DX their card supports?

what card do you have?

if you want to know what is capable of DX9

GeForceFX or 6*00 series

Radeon 9500 or higher

and the FX cards require that you force DX9 mode because they get raped in DX9 mode and default to 8.1

Hmm... I've got an FX5200. Maybe I'll scrape in (as if I'll ever even get HL2).

don't forget to turn on these things in console or in a autoexec.cfg file if you have an AMD processor

r_mmx 1
r_sse 1
r_sse2 1
r_3dnow 1

That should give you a pretty good speed boost.

Terrible? Even if DX9 shots look better, I seriously think DX7 shots look better than.. Jedi Knight, for instance. Or first HL game. Something that looks good enough to be played.

Your standards surprise me.
