Avacado - fruit or vegetable?
2004-11-22, 5:47 PM #1
I've had an argument with someone I work with. He says avacados are a fruit because they grow on trees, and only fruits grow on trees. I say its a vegetable (just like the tomato is) because it does not have a sweet or sour taste to it, and it doesn't matter how it grows, just how it tastes. Who is right?

I believe it's a fruit.

My understanding is that anything with (a) seed(s) is a fruit, and anything which is a leaf, root, or flower is a vegetable.

So technically things like avocados, tomatos, and cucumbers are all fruits.

I don't know what to think. My guess would be fruit...

But here's what one of my friends shouted when my History class got into an argument over whether tomatoes were fruits or veggies:

"Look, if it goes in a salad it's a vegetable!"
I forget how he responded to "What about fruit salads?" but I'm pretty sure he was just trying to get the class to shut up by making a laugh :) -- if that was his aim, it worked

Yeah, that's what I thought too. But the idea of an avocado being a fruit is just plain wrong. So I will fight the system!

I've heard it referred to as the avocado fruit before, so i'm with echoman on this one.

And not to add to the already harsh, bitter sting of utter defeat or anything, but I believe tomatoes are fruit as well.

I'm going with veggie. I don't care if it's technically a fruit, it'll always be a veggie to me. Same with tomato.

It is not delicious on its own, therefore it is not a fruit.

Because of my custom title, I must vote for a fruit. But it certainly tastes more like a vegetable, that's for sure.

Heh, I have an avocado plant growing in a flowerpot right here in my apartment...

Tomatos are fruits too.

A fruit is "The ripened ovary or ovaries of a seed-bearing plant, together with accessory parts, containing the seeds and occurring in a wide variety of forms."

A vegetable is "A plant cultivated for an edible part, such as the root of the beet, the leaf of spinach, or the flower buds of broccoli or cauliflower."

So avocados and tomatos are fruits, but chives and bark are vegetables! ^_^
