Damnit. I accidentally deleted my entire /home/brian directory on my main machine. I lost so much I don't even know what I lost. I have backups of most of the important stuff (including all the work I've done on the back-end of Massassi, THANK GOD). I'm going to start backing up daily starting tonight. DAMNIT.

Wow. That really sucks. But it is good you had most of it backed up. If you didn't....wow...that would be absolutely awful.

No, I was root and I was trying to get rid of popfile*. First I did rm -rf popfile* as my username, but it said Permission Denied. So I switched to root and did rm -rf popfile*, except I screwed up and did rm -rf popfile * (note the space). DAMNIT DAMNIT DAMNIT.

The only reason I'm saved is because all my app conf has . in front of it, thus, it wasn't deleted. So I didn't lose my email/browser settings/etc. The most important thing I guess was my custom scripts for automatically synching with my work server, but I can remake those.

I'm sure there's other stuff I really wanted to save but that got deleted, but there's no way to get them back so I won't worry for now. I'm sure in a few days or weeks I'll realize what I lost > [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]

Anyway, I'm going to go get an external drive so I can back up my /home/ directory every night.

I have you beat, Brian.

I was cleaning out some old crap in my Linux box. Old settings and software I didn't want. I was directory switching all over the FS and I was un aware that I was in / directory. So I execute "rm -rf *" thinking I was in a program's directory or something. I'm sitting here waiting for it to get done. I noticed it taking a long time. I had not thought that the wanted directory was that big. Then I started getting strange permission errors. It was removing contents in the /proc directory. My initial reaction was "oh s***!!!" I do an ls only to see that /proc and /lost+found were the last two remaining directories. Here's the kicker though, I had mounted my Windows partition under /c. So yeah. With one stroke of the enter key, I had wiped my HD nearly clean.

If you were to do a similar thing to your harddrive from the DOS prompt, I don't think it would go to the Trash. I think it would be permanently deleted, just like it was for Brian in Linux. Windows doesn't like putting excessively large chunks like that in the Trash anyway.

KDE has a recylce bin, called "trash" that works very well. In fact, it goes beyond thast the Windows recycle bin does. By default, deleting *anything* *anywhere* will send it to the trash. (assuming you delete it via the GUI)

No computer should be without an extra hard drive for backups.

Would it really be so hard for someone to modify rm to prompt you if you try to execute rm -rf? I'm sure thousands of longtime *nixers would object, but I bet many would favor it.

Brian, is there no undelete utility for Linux? There are plenty for FATs and NTFSes.

Hate it when I do this kinda crap and mess all my stuff up.

The "Are you sure...?" popup has saved me a number of times (regardless of how @#$%ing annoying it is when you're in a hurry or something). I only wish it would give that popup when I click on "save" instead of "save as..." (I should really save under another filename or copy the file before I start working but I'm just too damn lazy [http://forums.massassi.net/html/rolleyes.gif] ).

Anyway, Brian, that sucks.

The dangers of the command prompt.

I'm sure this would be nearly impossible to do with a GUI of any type, even a linux one, so the matter is just that command prompts can be very dangerous.

That really sucks. I just lost some files the other week, though not in the same manner. Lost all my config files and whatnot, which is a real pain in the *** .

You could alias rm so that it just moves the files to a trash folder. Then you can just clean the trash folder out every so often (with a cron even). If you need to a retrieve a file, it will be in the trash folder you made. So, it would be a Recycle Bin pretty much.

Also, I would change your prompt so it displays the directory your in at all times. Therefore, there is less of a chance of doing an rm -rf * in the wrong directory. Not to mention you'll never need pwd ever again. I haven't a clue how to do it in bash though (assuming you're all using bash under Linux, bleh).

SAJN, you should never back up your data on to a webhost. Ever. Most normal people do the opposite; they backup their website locally. I can't even fathom why you would do that.

You can easily do the same thing in Windows, SavageX, also, you don't HAVE to type rm -rf * as root if you don't want to. This is why you should never install anything into your home directory that should be run as root in root's folder. Basically, I was trying to delete all these popfile logs, and they should never have been in my home directory in the first place.

You will never run into this junk if you stick with your GUI anyway.

I'm pretty sure Windows XP requires you to be logged in as the system administrator (not just any old administrator) and at the special administrator prompt in order to delete or modify any system critical files.

I know that i've never been able to delete windows with a format c: or deltree command (I have tried a few times out of curiosity).

So in this regard, XP and Linux are very similar about security of system critical data.
