Yea, this copy of Windows XP Pro that my friend gave me, that was supposedly unused, has apparently already been registered. So currently I need a Windows XP Professional CD Key within the next 29 days, or I'm screwed. The problem is my financial situation is not very good right now, and the lowest I can find a copy of XP Pro is for $100. If anyone knows of a place where I can get a copy of XP Pro or a key for any cheaper than this, I would appreciate it very much. Thanks.

I can get any version of windows free through my university.. however i'm pretty sure it would be illegal to do that and give the key to someone else :-\ even if i dont use it myself.

Can't you just show MS that you have the authorized copy in your possession, and have it re-registered?

If you're the only person using this copy of the program, call MS and tell them. If you're not..well, then buy it, I guess..try the for sale/trade forum on anandtech.com.

As far as I know I am the only one using it, my friend who gave me the copy is using XP Home, so I dunno who else would be using this same serial key.

no activation. You just install it and the activation screen never comes up.

Other than that, its exactly the same as pro.

I got a free copy of Pro SP 1a from my college. I found an older computer, installed it, registered it, used it for 2 weeks, and haven't been back to it since.

I like Win2k just fine.

Do you maybe mean it has been registered "too many times" and it prompts you to call them?
The call is free and saying you had formatted or bought new hardware is enough

I would never call microsoft.. mostly because most if not all of my software is pirated or copied in some way....

Calling microsoft would mean the death of me and my family :o which is why I wouldn't do it :p I shall stay isolated from the Great Gates corp. :cool:

that wouldn't work if he only has regular professional edition.
Corporate edition has a few extra files that regular pro does not have, so a corporate key might be rejected outright, or at best, it would let him install, but he would stil have to activate.

Heh I get this stuff all free through my dad's corperate license at work... I don't think I've ever had to pay for a piece of Window's software.

Apparently we can... I found a bug in the forum if you click the submit button twice really fast it put's out two posts and doesn't trip the flood control.
