I saw the StarCraft thread and got an interest in SC again, but when I started playing, I noticed the resolution was a little too low for me. So I searched and searched for something to change it...but I can't find it. Is there no resolution changer or am I just missing it?

I used to believe that we must fight the future, lest change come without our consent. I was wrong. The truth is that we must embrace the future, for only with change can we remain the same.

I'm pretty sure the best you're going to get is 800x600

Yes, I want 800X600. But how it is now it looks like 640X480. And yes, I looked in options and it's not there.

I could be mistaken, but I think all the older blizzard games, warcraft I, II, and starcraft, diablo, maybe diablo II, all had set resolutions. The only one I remember seeing extensive video options for (including resolution) was in warcraft III.

They usually do that in RTS games (have a set res) to make it fair, so that people with higher-end computers can't get a larger viewing space than people with slower pcs.

Most RTS games i play dont have set resolutions (and i've played quite a few). Its jsut that Starcraft is old enough that they didn't need to have an option to change resolution.

Diablo II allowed you to change to 800x600, but I think that was cuz of LoD.

StarCraft is the only strategy(maybe even of all my games) that doesn't let me change the res.

I'm just confused on how I could stand playing at 640x480 before. It boggles the mind.

Did you have a smaller monitor before ? It just occured to me that Starcraft is going to look like **** on my new 21" monitor...

Yeah but than again StarCraft was never leading the world in terms of graphics to begin with.

LOD added the 800x600 resolution to Diablo II.

As for the resolution, we all could stand it because most of us used a 15" monitor back then, and we weren't spoiled by all those hi-res 3D shooters yet... We hadn't even seen UT yet.

Yeah, Starcraft still has great looking SPRITE graphics. And therein lies the problem. You cannot, I repeat, CANNOT change the resolution, simply because the entire game is sprite based. IF they were to allow it to use higher resolutions, they would have to do one of three things:

A. Stretch everything. Sounds fine, until you see the result. Imagining taking the good old Mario sprite and doubling its size. Looks like complete crap.

B. Increase overall viewing area. This is the technique Diablo II used to implement 800x600. So technically, you PvPers should be using 800x600, because you can see farther. This would give an unfair advantage in Starcraft, and that would spell death to the world's most balanced game.

C. Remake all the graphics. Now we know this won't happen. Some games do do this, but that is usually done during development of the game. And even then, you are restricted to very few resolutions. To make Starcraft work in 800x600 or another resolution, they'd have to remake EVERY SINGLE sprite in the game. That includes all the units and their actions, the menues, the ground and map objects, etc. It would cost them a fortune.

And that's pretty much why you can't play it in anymore than 640x480. If you want to see what the stretched version looks like, bring up your favorite Linux distro. Wine will allow you to force it to a certain resolution, which ends up freaking the menus out a bit, but it works. When you get ingame, it looks like someone puked on your screen and let it dry.

I'm not saying they usually do it in RTS games. I'm just saying that when they do, that's usually the reason. For example, Red Alert 2 has an option when you create a multiplayer game to force the clients to use a set resolution. (which is 800x600, I think.)
