Yeah, Starcraft still has great looking SPRITE graphics. And therein lies the problem. You cannot, I repeat, CANNOT change the resolution, simply because the entire game is sprite based. IF they were to allow it to use higher resolutions, they would have to do one of three things:
A. Stretch everything. Sounds fine, until you see the result. Imagining taking the good old Mario sprite and doubling its size. Looks like complete crap.
B. Increase overall viewing area. This is the technique Diablo II used to implement 800x600. So technically, you PvPers should be using 800x600, because you can see farther. This would give an unfair advantage in Starcraft, and that would spell death to the world's most balanced game.
C. Remake all the graphics. Now we know this won't happen. Some games do do this, but that is usually done during development of the game. And even then, you are restricted to very few resolutions. To make Starcraft work in 800x600 or another resolution, they'd have to remake EVERY SINGLE sprite in the game. That includes all the units and their actions, the menues, the ground and map objects, etc. It would cost them a fortune.
And that's pretty much why you can't play it in anymore than 640x480. If you want to see what the stretched version looks like, bring up your favorite Linux distro. Wine will allow you to force it to a certain resolution, which ends up freaking the menus out a bit, but it works. When you get ingame, it looks like someone puked on your screen and let it dry.
