New weapon in the Doom 3 expansion!
2004-11-23, 6:28 PM #1
Wow! I just read my new copy of CGW, in which it has a segment about the Doom 3: Resurrection, and one of the new weapons is so original and innovative... Here, I'll just type what it says

Quote:
"The Ionized Plasma Levitation gun, or, more commonly, the Grabber , makes excellent use of the physics engine in Doom 3 . This tool allows you to hold and launch just about any imaginable object in the game. See a box, target it, use it as a shield, and then launch it at the demons as a weapon. It introduces a whole new mechanic to the game. Small creatures like trites are also fair game. Pick 'em up and send 'em flying. We even got creative in our demo and started catching fireballs and rockets in midair, only to launch 'em back at foes. There's no better humiliation kill than gibbing someone with their own shot."

Wow! What a unique concept! I don't think that's ever been done before! The idea of using a gun to pick up crates, using them to shield yourself from enemy fire, and then launching them back, all using realistic physics is just... amazing! Hats off to the guys at Id Software for their originality!

(On a more serious note, I actually think it's a good thing that other games are picking up on the idea. Something like this can only make good games even better, and I hope to see more games using similar concepts in the future. But I just couldn't resist the temptation of making fun of Doom 3 :P)
Moo.

There's already a gravity gun mod for doom3. I haven't tried it out yet, though. Apparently it's really good. someone here should check it out and post screenies for me, since I can't try it out myself...

can you catch fireballs and rockets in HL2?

Actually, these weapons have been in the planning for a while now. Since a WHILE ago. Before much about HL2 was known. Coincidence just brought them together, and HL2 released it first.

Of course, that doesn't mean much to HL2 fanboys like yourself, so I shouldn't preach.

Either way, I'm getting my double barrelled shotty, and I will like it.

I really didn't find the gravity gun too amazing myself. Rather bland and uninteresting to me. The 'grab' feature was far more interesting, especially since it was a bit more useful, and not much different than an actual weapon of the same function. Jettisoning the object isn't all that magnificent either, since you've got projectile weapons that are far more useful for that, anyway. Overall, it seemed a bit of a gimmick to me, and not worth as much time is spent on it. Besides, the gravity gun puzzles were annoying, and the entire thing only seems like a way for them to show off HL2's engine, and now Doom 3's.

Haha. I think the concept is awesome for the Doom 3--it really had a whole physics engine coded out which was almost NEVER used. I thought that was disappointing. This gets to show it off. But even better--it seems like it could make things a lot easier. Not only that, but I don't have to buy a game I don't want to mess with a grav gun :)

... Dude. Did you miss the last half of my post? It's a joke. I personally think a gravity gun in Doom 3 would be an awesome idea, which I kinda already said in my first post. But of course, that doesn't mean much to Doom 3 fanboys like yourself. You just wanted an opportunity to insult me again.

As for DeT: You can catch grenades, and those energy orb things that the pulse rifle shoots. Havn't tried rockets yet, so I'm not sure about those.

But seriously, it's a joke, people. I thought there were going to be atleast four replies before someone took me seriously :P

If Doom 3 had been any fun, this might be cool.
2004-11-23, 6:39 PM #11
It seemed like sarcasm to me. I'll admit I'm a fanboy of Doom 3 to an extent--if you like the game, cool, but if you don't, fine, just don't trash it. However HL2 fanboys all seem to go "OMG HOW CAN YOU NOT WANT HL2 IT R SO AMAZING". My response--"Meh"

It was sarcasm, but I tried to make it obvious that I was joking, too. Guess I didn't make it clear enough.

The same can be said for Doom 3 fanboys, and my response to them. I played the demo, and found it mildly interesting, but given my current financial situation it isn't worth spending the money on. It was impressive, but I didn't care for it that much. As I've said on previous occasions, if I could spare the money I'd definitely buy it.

I'm just tired of being attacked for supposedly being a "fanboy." I like HL2 more than I like Doom 3, the same way I like StarCraft more than I like, say, Age of Empires. That doesn't mean they're both not good games, I just prefer one over the other. And I've tried to make this as clear as I can whenever I post something concerning either game, but for some reason I still am always labeled as a "fanboy."

As for the topic at hand (As I said in my first and second post), More games using a gravity gun or similar innovative ideas can only mean good things for the gamers, and I'm eager to see how they pull it off in D3:R.
Moo.

CoW--You ARE a fanboy. You just admitted it :p

And I agree. I just think it's funny Valve and id were thinking in the same direction.

Sorry the shots are nothing amazing but I wasn't really sure what else there was, most of what I saw I'll try to explain.

The gravity gun is just what it says, and it works.

The thing is that in Doom 3 there isn't a ton of stuff you can pick up. You can pick up people, barrels, and maybe a few other things. I couldn't pick up boxes, hamburgers, or bits of paper and stuff (maybe I did it wrong?)

You click on enemies and it sort of paralyzes them and drains them of health until they die and become ragdolls. Then you can fling them around realistically without them clipping or folding in a totally unrealistic manner. The skeletal system in Doom 3 is REALLY well done and it shows as you fling around the people. Launching stuff works, it's pretty dang powerful. Some NPCs you see doing seperate dialogue farther off can't be picked up (either that or you just can't pick up through objects).

So it works like it says, and it works well (when it works). It kills enemies in about 3-5 seconds.

I'd play more, but it's slow on my GF4 and I really didn't plan to play again until I upgrade to a 6600 or 6800 in January. I had to go through the non-weapon part again and get a pistol before you can get the grav gun or I'd have tested it on a sentry bot.

Hope you like it.

Yeah, it would've been nice if you could pick up bodies in HL2 with the gravity gun.
2004-11-23, 8:13 PM #23
Well, you can, just not until near the end of the game.
2004-11-23, 8:14 PM #24
Spoiler:
You can, wait until the last level.

Er yeah, what spud said.

@Spud: I'm happy you told me 'cause now I'm looking forward to it, but I'm pissed 'cause the surprise is ruined.

I've had the gravity gun mod for a while... it's incredibly fun. I hope the gravity gun in the expansion is as fun.

There had better be some sawblades to toss around.
I bet you think that's funny, don't you.

HL2 wasn't the first to have a gravity gun... not gravitygun+good physics... ok maybe

Maybe both DJ Yoshi and CoW are 'fanboys'

However, the difference is that CoW tried doom 3, tried it, kinda liked it, might get it sometime.

DJ Yoshi, however, won't even give HL2 a try, and there are ofcourse ways he could do this
(Try it on a friend's machine.)

"I will never play HL2." He said or something along the lines of that in the chat.

So, untill he is able to stop being arrogant and atleast stop judging HL2 (I can count atleast two occasions or more where he has called HL2 a crappy, or craptacular game without even trying it before) he will be the worst type of fanboy.

CoW however, yes, is a fanboy, I guess you could call him that. Him and I both have a bit of an, obsession with half-life and half-life 2 (primarily the story, but we love the game too)

but atleast we're open minded, and try to avoid judging games before they were out or had tried them.
CoW didn't really judge doom 3 before he tried it.
I, however, did. And I appologize for doing such.

(these views are my own and are not the views of A_Big_Fat_CoW, I posted this completley on my own views and beliefs. He had nothing to do with this post so don't take it out on him.)

HL2 is great. Doom 3 is great.

This thread is about a new weapon in Doom 3. HL2 has nothing to do with it, even if the weapons are similar.

Fanboyism ends ... here. :p
