Home during thanksgiving break. Don't have my desktop with me, just my laptop. Got bored and bought HL2 to occupy me for a while. Runs like a dream on my laptop at 1024x768 and mostly medium settings. Only really bad part is some slightly longer than normal load times, but that's mainly due to the 4200 RPM hard drive.

I'm really surprised how well it works with a 32 MB Mobility Radeon 9000 though (definitely the bottleneck of the system with a 1.6 GHz Pentium M and gig of memory).

Too bad I'll probably have it beaten before Sunday when I can actually try it on my desktop, heh.

Another HL2 thread?

Yeah, it runs great on my Radeon 9200 and Centrino 1.5 ghz. I've got it at 1280x800, medium settings, low textures though (only 32mb for the video card), 4xAF. I was quite surprised. :)
2004-11-23, 8:52 PM #4
ah yes. 1.5Ghz, 512mb ram, GF4 ti4200 128mb, runs briliantly 1280x960, with tex and model on high, other stuff medium or low. or something like that. just have that stuttering the first 30 seconds after a loading screen, but thats gonna be fixed soon i guess. no AF or AA. i cant really tell the difference... it doesnt look like my AA works anyways... but it still slows it down for some reason.

Hmm... so how long until this turns into another "Doom 3 vs. HL2" flamewar?

Doom 3 runs like crap on low-end PC's so there's no use bringing it up here. :p

It would take longer if you didn't have to mention it.

Yeah, it really does run surprisingly well on lower-end comps. However, I've heard of MANY many problems with getting it running at ALL. :\

There was a thread with Doom3 running (fuglily) on a voodoo2 (12MB!!)...

...My question - would HL2 run on my Laptop?

2.8GHz Celeron
256 RAM
This is the problem, on board graphics - I use the BIOS settings to allocate visual memory - I'm looking at getting another 256 soon though so I'll have 512 to play with altogether.

I dont think it run on my pc :(

1.3ghz
256ram and a geforce 2

my pc sucks
nope.

HL2 scales down so yes it can run on both those systems but it will be running on DirectX7 which means no shiny water and lots of props will be missing (grass for example).

Bloodlines runs like poop on my machine, the stuttering issue makes me want to kill.

Bloodlines pretty much runs like crap on any system. My computer may not be top of the line, but I see no slowdown in HL2, but with the same settings in Bloodlines, my framerates go low enough to notice.

I've got a decent system, except for the video card. 1.6 ghz 712 mb ram geforce 2 64 mb card.. Should I bother picking it up? I was thinking about getting hl 2 today. I don't care about graphics, I just want to know if I can get it smooth with low settings.

Indeed! It seems like i might get away with it...

I'm guessing you could probably run it on low settings well, Freelancer.

Martyn though, that'd be a major stretch. It runs well on my laptop mainly because it's a powerhouse in the processor and memory department. A celeron 2.8 well, doesn't compare well to a 1.6 GHz Pentium M, and 256 MB of memory (especially with some of it shared to integrated video) pales to a gig. Add in the integrated video... Yeah, I'd be surprised if you got playable framerates at low settings. Maybe possible at 640x480.
2004-11-24, 11:14 AM #21
The memory and video card are going to be a MAJOR bottleneck on your system Martyn. Good luck with that. :p

What the hell is this ****? The game is like 4 gigs over 5 CDs, so the damn thing already takes half an hour to install. I was lucky enough to create a Steam account and have a valid CD key, but now it's doing this "decrypting gmae files" crap, and has been doing so for the past 15 minutes. What the hell is going on?

So you only need a 32 MB video card? Wow....guess I'll might get this game if my 64 MB Geforce 4 will be sufficent.
2004-11-24, 7:12 PM #27
It is very impressive what this game can run on.
To the people who keep saying "another HL2 thread?" yes, theres lots of threads, thats what happens when a game like this comes out, you can normally tell which threads are HL2 threads so it should be easy to avoid if they bother you so much.

Yes...another question if it'll run on MY computer.

2.8 ghz
1 gig of ram

and I'm thinking of buying this card just for the game:
http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=316027&pfp=BROWSE

Would I be able to run it? I know the 3d card isn't the best, but I'm hoping my ram and processor can make up for it...

Back (after a playing hl2 for many, many hours..) to report that it runs great on my setup. The default options were already set to where I would have put them. Nice.

Some good benchmarks are here:

In general, I'd highly recommend you go with the Radeon 9600 XT for only 35 bucks more as it's worth it.
