Help me reinstall DirectX

I have DirectX 9.0c but I installed the debug version. How do I go about fixing it so it's the retail (gaming) version. I know you select at install, but I am not sure I can just uninstall directX. I do not want to break anything here...

Yeah best way I can think of is reformat the OS... I have never heard of someone actually trying to uninstall direct x... have you checked the microsoft help yet?

couldn't you just delete all the data files that it uses and then just use a "repair" option..

i have no idea if that would work.. just throwing out an idea

I'm pretty sure reinstalling whatever version will overwrite the debug version. I may be wrong.

[edit: Having just done a little research, it is not a good idea to uninstall DirectX drivers. It can cause a lot of problems, maybe even screw up your OS. Of course, I suppose you could just reinstall that, too. Best suggestion is just to reinstall whatever version you're wanting.]

No deleteing Windows files is a bad thing... the repair thing has like a 30/70 of actually working.

well id take a 30/70 chance rather than reinstall the os cuz thats a pain

I'd go with Dogsrool's suggestion. I mean, if you changed it one way you should be able to change it the other way, right?

A "feature" of DirectX is the uninstall ability or lack thereof.

I actually did uninstall DirectX once. It was a pain in the furry ***. Not only did I have to remove the DX9 files (which I had to learn what they ALL were), I had to delete the ones in the "backup" folder. There is a folder in system32 that contains a backup of all necessary system .dll/.vxd/.sys/etc should you screw up and delete one/several.

Another option. Roll back your system. I'm assuming you did not turn off system restore and that you have Windows XP.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

Unfortuantly most people do turn off the system restore because of the ammount of overhead is causes at times... this usually spells death for the system and is an incredibly stupid thing to do but most people still do it.

Why is it stupid? It's easier to format/reinstall than do anything else. Not to mention it doesn't waste HardDrive space. And of course, as long as you keep decent backups, you'll be fine.

I'm going to download directX 9.0c full and choose the other option and see if it overwrites and switches the files used. Thanks. I'll tell you if I destroy anything.

I serriously doubt it will distroy anything... might take up a bit more diskspace but won't destroy anything.

Don't you have this option in the control panel?
