we picked up some absinth. $86 for a 750ml (26oz) bottle.
you're supposed to put a sugar cube in a spoon then pour some absinth in, light it on fire and let it burn until the sugar carmelizes then put it in water and drink it.
70% alcohol.
with all the burning spoons and so much alcohol i feel like it should be illegal.
then we'll light the cuban my buddy recieved as a gift.
it's going to be a good night tonight.

they made this stuff more widely known in the movie moulin rouge. which was an awesome movie btw.
my wife was bugging me to go see it in the theatre with her and i wouldn't go. then i got it for her for christmas on dvd.
we put in in christmas night to watch it and within the first 6 minutes i looked at her and said, 'we should've seen this in the theatre.'
man was she pissed. it is such a good movie.

oh f*** yes....

I would love to get my hands on some real absinthe. Unfortunately, its banned here for some stupid reason. (people thought it could get you high, when in reality it's no worse than any other high-proof beverage. For politicians, legislating while stupid should be a crime. )

it just became legal a couple of years ago here.

on another note, i'm getting a still which are now legal without a lisence.
it's a big all glass one from a chemistry lab.
it's awesome. it'll make about 40oz at a time.
i'll show pics when i get it.

Green Fairy!

Oh, and I watched Moulin Rouge yesterday (twice). It's been one of my favorite movies for ages. Too bad I missed it in the theater... :(

So I take it YOUR favorite movie is Trainspotting? ;)

Absinthe...I've heard great things about it.

I could make an obscure music quote, but you wouldn't get it (though saberopus might ;))

I have never tasted absinth, but it's certainly something that should be tasted. Though it looks like the different brands have really huge differences in taste, some being very bad...

You dont have to burn anything, the real way to do it is as follows:

Take a slotted spoon, and put it on top of a glass of absinthe. Take a sugar cube and put it on top of the slotted spoon
Then pour cold water over the suger cube and the sugar water, will dillute it into a white-ish cloudy colour.

By the way, most absinthe is illegal in most parts of the world, you can obtain it easily on-line though :P. And it does poroduce some sort of "high", real absinthe ocntains thujon, found in wormwood. My friends have described it as a "drunk trip", not so much tripping, but mild hallucinations but really drunk.

I had some in Prague. Never did the whole burning thing, just drank it straight. Very cool.

Have some... um... souvenirs that I brought back with me. Seriously though, it's fun.

Sounds like something I'd drink straight. Or mix with mountain dew. Good booze is wasted on me due to my love for mountain dew. Jaegar, Schnapps, Smirnoff, Vodka... all needs mountain dew with it. Dew is good.
Hazard a company one process.

You should die for even thinking of mixing Absinthe with your dirty, dirty drink. Die. Just die.

In the U.S., traditional Absinthe is illegal to sell for human consumption because it contains the chemical thujone which is banned by the FDA for use in foods but allowed in some herbs known to contain thujone (Title 21, Chapter 1, Part 172.510). Some types of absinthe are sold in the U.S. which contain no thujone and other absinthes are imported into the U.S. despite FDA regulations.

A second legal issue with absinthe is that it is illegal in the United States to distill alcohol (even for personal consumption) without paying special taxes, filing paperwork & requesting a license from the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms. We haven't researched exactly what is involved in this process, but it seems quite complex and impractical. Some absinthe recipes call for distilling the product and some do not. So, technically a distilled absinthe could be illegal if made without a license. It is also illegal to sell any alcohol for human consumption without a license.

It is likely legal in the US to produce absinthe for one's personal use using commercially available distilled liquor and infusing one's own herbs into the alcohol, although any thujone-containing drinks are illegal to sell or distribute.

In short the stuff is way nasty, though the flaming carmelized sugar thingy sounds like it could be cool. Now where did my shipment of childrens cough syrup go? (omg reference!)

Chem lab:
Sugar + yeast + salts + water + distillation column = 3 oz. 91% ethanol. Best. School experiment. Ever.

very true. The stuff is so damn hard to get these days that mixing it with anything is a travesty.

From Hell has Johnny Depp drinking absinth...and smoking opium...ha...now that's a good movie.

A brief web search seems to indicate to me that it's not illegal (anywhere?) in EU, although there might be some upper limits for the thujone concentration, and those limits may differ from country to country. Though my research of the subject was very brief and superficial...

And matrixhacker, I think the burning way is a very traditional one, as well.

Very drinkable, as it was filtered through carbon. It was also tested in gas-phase chromography (is that how it's called in English?) to make sure there was no methanol or other foreign substances.

You have to be careful though, 3 oz. of 182 proof can probably be deadly if you drink it quickly like a shooter. I mixed it with some Five Alive.
