And now, a random thread about dog meat
2004-11-29, 9:58 AM #1
I was eating hamburger, and for some reason, I started thinking about dog meat. I remember seeing an old show on TV where people were served dog meat and weren't told until they'd taken at least one bite. It was presented as an alternative to more expensive meats, and a possible solution toward decreasing starvation in third-world countries.

I, for one, think that's gross. But an interesting question arose in my mind: if people raised dogs for meat, would animal control have any authority to intervene?

What about cat meat?

never tried it, would try it.

hell, if someone offered me well cooked human i'd probablys try it.

if people are allowed to keep pigs as pets, dogs should get their very own slaughterhouses set up.

I've never actually heard of cat being eaten, but considering the stories I've heard about torturing and killing cats, I wouldn't expect less.

I don't really support the killing of any demi-sentient animals for the purpose of food, or other production. That goes for Cats, Dogs, Monkeys and perhaps others as well.

Um I think you saw the show wrong. I think they were served dog FOOD meat, not actual DOGS turned into food. I remember once they served alpo and someone loved it so much they asked to know how to cook it.
I can't think of anything to put here right now.

*Actually I do eat pigs and like them very much, but I couldn't resist the urge to make that "quote".

But I wouldn't eat a dog if I had known it and they don't look very tasty, IMHO.

No. It was definitely dog meat, not dog food. I specifically remember the lady saying "dog meat."

You people know that in quite a few Asian countries dog meat is on any avarage restaurant menu right?

I have no objections over eating dog meat, though I've never had the option. I'd defenitely try it out.

I would never eat a dog, or any animal, that I personally knew though.

But how is that with eating dogs it's "but they are so cute" and with sheep, cows, pigs and chickens it's suddenly a totally different. If you keep those as pets they are just as cute...

I've eaten cows, rabbits, pigs, sheep, goats, turkey, feasant, kangaroo, deer, austrich, bunny, hare, shark, dozens of other fish and shellfish, I have no doubt that a well baked dog will taste me just as fine.

This thread makes me hungry :(

I've never had it. It's a cultural thing that makes eating dog meat "bad" here because dogs are viewed as pets in society. In other cultures, it's perfectly acceptable to eat dog meat.

I would certainly taste it. But as has been already said, if I had a dog as a pet, I wouldn't eat that particular dog. Otherwise I see no problem in the whole thing. Animals eat other animals. It has always been so. And since so many people eat dogs all the time, they possibly can't taste bad...

There are entire activist groups specifically for the 'rights of dogs' that go to asian countries trying to get dog-meat illegalized. They even pester sellers, and let dogs loose from their cages at slaughter houses. I even remember watching a television show where they followed a group like this, trying to 'raise awareness' for their cause. The leader was eating a Hardes burger and a side order of chicken nuggets while talking about how immoral eating dogs is. They've got a dog with them, and the guy throws the dog a piece of burger saying "He's too cute to kill" to the dog. I laughed, then changed the channel.

Seriously, I find it sad that such beautiful animals are killed, but it's NOT at ALL inhumane. It's quite natural, and is just as bad as killing a cow. In-fact, I have quite a hard time killing rabbits and deer with a bow, and I'm quite an avid hunter.

I have had dog meat when I went to the northern shaolin camp here in MN and they had all kinds of food there from different asian cultures. I went strait for the meats and tried all sorts of different things, and Dogmeat stuck out the most when I was told what it was. It really doesn't taste all that great at all. It's more like tofu than anything, with more of a stringy beef texture to it. Needed lots of spices to taste all that good.

The only reason we disagree with dogs as meat is because we were all raised in a culture which places dogs as pets. It's like they're a part of the family. Would you eat a family member? I hope not.

I personally would eat a dog. Not a dog I actually knew, but I would try it. Who knows, maybe it's really good?

What are you doing eating dogs in the first place.

A dog is an animal, same as a chicken, same as a cow, same as [insert any animal here]. I see no difference personally.

Yeah, but most of the animals we eat are prey, not predators.

Eating dog is not uncommon in Asia. I don't really see why it's any more 'disgusting' than eating cows or chickens.

If we can eat them, they are prey.
