Old Doom 3 tweak?
2004-11-29, 4:40 PM #1
When Doom 3 first came out, there was some link posted here that went to another forum post about how there was some line in the Doom 3 config file, that if you upped the number and you had enough RAM, it would increase your performance? Anyone remember what this line was or still have a link to that forum post?

r_vertexBufferMegs “x”. x specifies the amount, in MBs, of video memory allocated to ARB_vertex_buffer_object, by default, 32MB. If you set both of the previous options to 0 you can ignore this option. You should leave this alone if you have a Graphics card with less than 128MB video memory, although if you have 256MB video memory then you might want to consider raising this up to a dozen or so MBs (48) for improved performance.

While that might help performance, I don't think that's the command I'm thinking of. This one had "cache" somewhere in it I think.

That's the ingame way of changing it.

Theres a setting in the .ini file in your Doom installation with the same setting. Change whatever is in quotes to something a bunch higher, like 128.

In your DOOM 3 directory, find "DoomConfig.cfg" (x:\Program Files\Doom 3\base).
Open DoomConfig.cfg in Notepad.

Find the lines:

seta image_cacheMegs "32" (May be "20" on some computers)
seta image_cacheMinK "(Not sure which number thats supposed to be here"
seta image_useCache "0"

anyway, change the settings to the following:

seta image_cacheMegs "xxx" (xxx - Half the number of you RAM, so if you have 512 mb RAM, you should put 256 here, 1024 - 512 etc..)
seta image_cacheMinK "20480"
seta image_useCache "1"

seta image_useCache "1" - This enables the memory cache tweak, if this is set to 0, it would be disabled, logically..

seta image_cacheMink "20480" - Im not 100% sure what this does, i think it has something to do with the minimum use of cache in Kilobytes... Anyway, i heard this is the number it should be on..

seta image_cacheMegs "xxx" - The amount of ram the program should use (In this case, Doom 3). I advise you only to set this number to the half of the total RAM you have, or it may take alot of CPU power and that will result in the occational 3 - 5 second lag when you open doors and stuff.
