Jury duty....

I just got my first jury duty letter in the mail. It's for Jan 10, but that's when my Spring semester begins for uni, so I'll have to reschedule for the next week I have off, which is unfortunately, spring break.

There goes my spring break down the s***ter. :(

Post your jury duty experiences.

if you're in America, as a full time student, you can get out of doing jury duty. that's what I did a couple of years ago

I've been called to jury duty about 3 times in my life. The first time happened when I was 18. I was still in high school then and I was still attending classes so I was able to get off because of that. When the second time came, all I had to do was call a phone number during the course of the week to see if my assigned group had to come in or not. Thankfully, I was never called so I got out of that. Last summer, I had to go down to the court house to await if my group would be called or not. After waiting for an hour while sitting with a bunch of strangers, they excused my group and post pone my next service for a year.

The trick is to say you're prejudice against all races.

Not the least bit true. It depends on the county. Trust me..

Not entirely...

San Diego County does NOT make exceptions for students. You can postpone until your semester is done or when you are next available but students are NOT exempted from jury duty.

Quick edit: As I prove Freelancer's point.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

I've had about half a dozen notices since I turned 18 but I've never had to go to the court house. I've been able to postpone it or the jury pool is full by the time my group comes up.

You should be able to get a 6 month postponment for school. I've always done that and it's never been a problem.

Why don't people like jury duty? It's one of your... two? three? JOBS as an american, next to taxes and voting.

I wish I could serve as a juror, but I'm rather unlikely to be picked, considering I have a close aunt who's a police officer. Apparently that introduces bias and they wouldn't like me...

gah.

It's a hassle when you work for a living. YOu don't get paid for the missed time. You can be sequestered, which means you don't get to have any contact with the outside world, which can include family. Missed school time. The possibility of being on a jury for months. There are plenty of reasons people don't like it.

I just had jury selection summons today. sat out in a big hallway, didnt even get to be part of the random group of people that the lawyers got to fight over for being in hte jury or not :(. COuple hours of wasted fun

Telling them you're a liberal would make you get out faster, I bet.

In San Bernardino county, we get paid, but very, very little (something like 2 or 3 bucks an hour), and usually the cases are murder or assault trials (San Bernardino...eh). I had a summons once, but I got out by telling the lawyer that I support the death penalty, and that I am biased, because I already don't like the defendant. When the lawyer asked why, I said "Well, they arrested him, didn't they? He must have done something."
2004-11-30, 9:19 AM #22
The pay isn't worth anything. 2 bucks an hour max, which doesn't come close to being able to live on. You're losing a lot of money when you have to go in for JD..

That depends on where you live. In Texas maybe. Most other places, no. If you a liberal minority, you'd never get out, because that would be "racist". If they did give you the boot you’d have the ACULA all over you. Defense lawyers love people who listen to stuff like, “he was black, therefore he was pure as the driven snow and, all the bad, white, racist policemen must be punished.”

1) Texas is hardly the only Republican state. Utah has a higher percentage than Texas.

2) Kicking a liberal off a potential jury is far from racist. Slightly discriminitory, perhaps, but not racist. By the way, that's not how they weed out jury members. They ask you questions that don't pertain to politics, to see whether or not you're biased in some way or another that would prevent you from making an objective ruling.

3) ACULA? I.. think you mean the ACLU, and no, they wouldn't take your stupid case.

4) Proof? Sounds pretty ridiculous to me.

could you get out of it by saying that no matter what happens in the trial, you'll give your opinion on the toss of a coin?

I think he was getting at that juries these days have to be diverse or it's not viewed as fair, especially if the defendant is a minority.

If there were an all white jury that convicted a black man of murder, even if he was guilty, the ACLU, among other groups, would be screaming about it.

I got paid 40 dollars from the city for showing up for less than an hour. And in my county, I believe your job has to continue paying you as if you were still showing up for work during that time.
2004-11-30, 1:06 PM #28
Most places have to hold your job but they don't have to pay you for time missed due to jury duty. If you have a salaried job, you might still get paid, but if you're hourly, it's not going to happen.

Yeah, I've never heard of wage-earners getting any kind of jury duty comp. Perhaps some who are on salary, but never a wage-earner unless you're damn lucky.

here, the pay for jurors is $15 a day, which is chickens***.

I think I'm going to have to do it. I can put it off for awhile, but sooner or later, I'm going to have to do it.
2004-11-30, 3:26 PM #31
The consequences for not showing up in some California counties is non-existent. However, I've heard of counties issuing 6 days in jail and a big fine.. so I would suggest going. ;)

I'm turning 21 in just a few days and I haven't received one letter for jury duty. It pays to have a criminal for a brother.

another thing of note, the county I live in uses the voter registration rolls as their name pool for jury duty...

It sounds like fun to me. It's like Law and Order, only in Real Life!

Why don't I ever get picked for that sort of thing? :(
