Odd problem...
2004-04-15, 10:32 AM #1
My computer has been acting odd lately.
It would all of a sudden stop. Stop dead. If there was harddrive chatter (I know the patterns for many programs.. I'm weird I know [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]) it would just stop. Then all of a sudden it would start up again as if nothing happened. I can't move the mouse or anything. It's like a normal comp freeze except it continues after a random period of time. It's almost as if it's going then stops, looks around, contemplates the meaning of life, then gets back to work.

I've done a virus scan and a spyware scan. Both came up that my comp was fine (except for the few tracking cookies).

Anyone know what the problem might be? It just started happening all of a sudden, and it happened with my old computer too. There is almost nothing in common between the two computers.

ACK! as I was typing this, it froze again for about 5 minutes...

Is MSWord running, perchance?

*shudder* You read my mind. But it's been happening before that. But, it's been happening more frequently since I installed Office 2k off a disk I found in the big box o' cds. (I needed a word processor that had a good *cough* spellcheck and layout etc, and this was what came close...)

If your running Win2k or Xp, load your task manager and look for 'findfast.exe'. if you find it, close it, and remove it from the startup folder. If your running 9x, hit Ctrl+Alt+Del and look for it in that list...

Findfast plagued my last computer for the first year I had it. Annoyed the hell out of me...

Finally figured out what it was...

what is findfast for, anyway? (probably nothing good, since Microsoft made it, but what the hell?)

Old aunts used to come up to me at weddings, poking me in the ribs and cackling, telling me, "You're next." They stopped after I started doing the same thing to them at funerals.

Findfast was a stupid program that was shipped with older versions of MSOffice that was *supposed* to index your harddrive when the system was *idle*. Unfortunatly, it would start indexing whenyou were using it, casing system slowdowns.

Ypager - Yahoo IM
Immap - Norton Firewall
Monwow - Norton Cleensweep
Csinsm32 - Norton Cleensweep
Navapw32 - Norton Antivirus
Poproxy - Norton Email proxy
Qttask - QuickTime quickstart
Sxgtkbar - Part of a sound driver for the Yamaha XG chipset
Loadqm - Part of MSN Messenger - REMOVE THIS
Systray - Windows taskbar
Csinject - Another part of Norton Cleensweep
Cg16eh - Norton CrashGuard Delux
Cgmenu - Norton Crashguard Monitor
</font>

I have 2 suggestions:
1) Uninstall Norton System Works. Seriously. Most of the programs in that suite are utterly useless. Keep the antivirus, but ditch the rest.
2) Uninstall MSN Messenger, or at least remove 'loadqm'. Loadqm is what is likely causing your problems.

Windows has a built-in defragger . . . unless your running NT4...

harhar thanks didn't see that.

ROFLMAO! In my story I have someone saying "Who are you?"
Office suggest it to be "Who is you?"

EDIT: Haha, now it's suggesting 'letting the wound bleed freely' to 'letting the wound bleeds free'

My computer used to do this... it annoyed the hell out of me. I could never figure out what the cause was. It eventually stopped though.

Also, moving this to the technology forum. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]
