I'm going effing crazy... Here's how it goes...

I turn my computer on, it comes up saying MSGINA.DLL is corrupt, please replace or something... So after installing another copy of windows in another directory, getting online, asking for advice here... I came to the conclusion (with some help) that I needed to run Repair... so I did... SUCCESS! Windows now loads and I can log in... oh but wait, XP lost round one, but here it comes back again strong in round two. Now, I cannot use any dial up connection, and I cannot create a new one. I discover that I have to start some services to get it to work, somehow, someway they got turned off... alas, I turn on the one I think will fix it, yet there are two more, one dependant on the other... and yet, the one I need to turn on now, won't start... If I try to load it under my username, it says something like 'cannot start , something something, under the same process' ... so once again, im effed... I tried starting it under Local System, and it says 'Error 5: Access Denied' ....

I so want to just delete that copy of windows, but I dont want to have to reinstall all my crap on this copy if i dont have to... especially since I dont know where all the discs are to everything i have installed. So yay me, %^@$ Bill Gates, and $%^$ Windows....

Anyone else want to bash?

Oh, and if anyone thinks they can help... i have a thread in the tech board. Thanks

That's one of the reasons I've decided very firmly against putting XP on my main computer. It seems to take a perverse pleasure in screwing you over for no reason every so often.

Try logging in under safe mode and use the administration account to get the privilliges right. Oh and btw the Linux fan boy do you mind keeping that crap out of here, a good helpful reply does not imply plugging your operating system.

Btw I'd never trust an OS that has Man Mount as a legal command.

I dont see why you people have so many problems with WinXP. I run two machines with XP Pro (SP2) I've never had any real problems with either machine (bar the heaps of crap my brother had installed on the laptop which I didnt need)

Hell, WinXP on my PII 350 still runs fine when I can be bothered to look at the damn thing. Not much point most of the time, all its got plugged in is power and network cable.
"Whats that for?" "Thats the machine that goes 'ping'" PING!
Q. How many testers does it take to change a light bulb?
A. We just noticed the room was dark; we don't actually fix the problems.

I still think that even with XP it wouldn't be a bad idea to format your HD every now and then, depending on how much you install and uninstall software. XP should be better than the old Windows versions, though, so the intervals probably can be longer.

Losing CDs is no excuse. What kind of management is that? Since HDs can break down, it's essential to be able to install everything anew.

And I agree with MechWarrior. If somebody wants to solve problems with WinXP, the solution is hardly to install another OS... How is that supposed to repair WinXP? Or is Linux shipped with uber WinXP repair tools nowadays?

I've had XP on my home computer since sometime in 2001. In that time, it has never given us any problems. Same with this computer. It is definitely the most stable of all the Windows OS's. Or maybe that's just because our previous OS at home was Windows ME...

I still think Windows 98SE is the best of the windows. I haven't had a single problem that was caused by the OS. All spyware and such.

Except there's this one problem... There's something in my task manager called KDE. When I end task it, I get a BSOD. Any idea what it is? I've never seen it before. Plus where's that site that has everything from the task manager explained?

Oh by the way, noob, he's already tried that. Read the thread.

Seriously, do TRY linux--you can use it to backup your files so you can change over to the other copy of Windows and all that good stuff, or better yet, give your harddrive a clean format.

Id really like to go without formatting, and losing all my files, and losing many programs that may take me weeks to find.

I would get hold of knoppix if you can access speedy internet - boot into that (it runs off a live CD), use it to back up all your files - then start from scratch.

And then you can throw away your knoppix cd if you so wish, but I keep one for situations such as this.

But why use Knoppix when soon you'll be able to use Gentoo ? :p

from KDE.org:

What is KDE?
General Overview

KDE is a network transparent contemporary desktop environment for UNIX workstations. KDE seeks to fill the need for an easy to use desktop for Unix workstations, similar to the desktop environments found under the MacOS or Microsoft Windows. We believe that the UNIX operating system is the best operating system available today. In fact UNIX has been the undisputed choice of the information technology professional for many years. When it comes to stability, scalability and openness there is no competition to UNIX. However, the lack of an easy to use contemporary desktop environment for UNIX has prevented UNIX from finding its way onto the desktops of the typical computer user in offices and homes. UNIX dominates the server market and is the preferred computing platform for computing professional and scientists. Without UNIX the internet would not be. But UNIX did not address the needs of the average computer user. This fact is particularly unfortunate since a number of implementations of UNIX (Debian GNU/Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD etc.) are freely available on the internet. All of which are of exceptional quality and stability.

If you have to format... I highly suggest ignoring the LINUX fanboys, and aquiring a copy of Windows 2000 pro.

2k Pro is the best os in the history of os... es...

I have a copy of Win2k Pro... I stopped using it because of some issues it had with my hardware and some games or something... I liked it though, very stable.

A Linux LiveCD is a very valuable tool for diagnosing and reparing Window's problems. And if you actually had read his other thread, you would know that he had already tried what you suggested, as Yoshi said.

It's when you say stupid **** like this that you should think about posting another "leaving..." thread.

This is the easiest fix, and I hope I'm not too late and your computer has rewritten its restore points...

Use the Windows XP restore function and go back to the last known good configuration. This should reset all of your settings to pre SP2. What's happened is a security update installed during the instalation of SP2 has not completed successfully. If you revert then you can try your hand at SP2 again and it'll probably work right.

When you boot up, press F8 like you would to enter safe mode. Eventually you'll get there and itll say "go back to last known good configuration"
