Now, no one will have an excuse to NOT try Gentoo, because you'll be able to pop the CD in any try it without installing it. The next release will also include a graphical installer.

Gather, Linux zealots, and discuss!

I do not understand!! Woo! I'm not a complete geek! :p

But really, what would the difference be between this knoppix? I'm aware that knoppix has debian (is it?) running under it, but how is that different (in LAYMAN's terms!)?

With debian you are work-ready in no time, while gentoo users are compiling everything from scratch and gain ePenis points en masse

Except with the LiveCD, the stuff will already be compiled. :) You'd be able to do an effortless HD-install of Gentoo and reap the benefits of Portage in no time.

Heh, when I saw the title, I was like WTF, Gentoo has had LiveCDs since... forever!

Then I realized after reading the article that they meant full GUI and more knoppix-like, and a custom installer script.

Meh, I'll still be doin' it the hard way, the compiling time is worth the end result.

That's already available. Dunno about "effortless", but it's called a Stage 3 installation. Kernel and major packages already installed. But it still doesn't reap the benefits of a cool Stage 1 install.

Compiling is optional, and you get the bonus of a system compiled with exactly the configuration you want. I have some of the harshest optimizations for speed for my architecture that I could find, while most other users of other distros are running generic 586 packages, sometimes 4 or 386.

Yeah I know, but I was talking about a graphical installer capable of an unattended install. :p
