Why don't distributors release cloaked versions of their game a few weeks before the release with viruses or spyware mixed in so they can hurt pirating? No one with common sense would probably be affected, but I'm sure they'd kill a large portion of stupid people off the idea of downloading stuff. They don't have to go out and announce it. They could just...tell a friend...uh...heres a copy of my game *wink wink*. Just mod it a little bit and put it out on the sharing networks for me. Why not?

Because developing viruses is illegal? If anyone found out they did it they could get sued?

Piracy will happen whatever. People see it as a challenge, getting around the latest copy protection methods.

Because that would be just as illegal as the piracy itself???

Spyware itself isn't illegal is it? I see it all the time on the crappy school computers. Besides, they don't have to create it. It's found all sorts of places.

Distributing it is illegal i think, plus adaware and spybot would just get rid od it anyway
nope.

You could probably make a pretty good case against the legality of anything that installs itself on your computer without your permission.

No, but three lefts do.

Look, it would never work. People would get around it. Plain and simple.

Or do what valve did...kinda.

My version:
Just make a pre-finished version of the game (or finished, whatever), with lots of bugs and problems in it, put it in a place that is unsecure, but private, and allow people to pirate it.

Make sure to include some software that will cut off the person after say...a day or a few hours or maybe a few days, then have the software send the personal information, such as IP address, or perhaps usernames, or whatever, to the company. Then the company can go after the piraters for taking software illegally.

There are games that have teamates that start firing on each other after playing the game for a bit if the game is pirated. I dont know which game, but I know they exsist.

Hahahaha.

It wouldn't be that hard for a company to hand off a "leaked" version of the game to some trusting 3rd party for him to install a virus in it and "leak" it. It'd be pretty hard to prove anything in the end or trace anything back to the company. All they would have to do is provide a good cover story for how the game got leaked, and they're off the hook.

I disagree. A negative times a negative is a positive.

Then you must add itself twice - negatively. Hence two wrongs DO make a right after all :p

I think the major problem with this plan is that the main distribution groups are full of people who aren't complete utter idiots.

Aye, anyone using p2p to get hold of things like this is more than likely to be at least running Ad-Aware/Spybot to tackle and gunk from that angle, using a virus shield, and are probably not stupid enough to at least wait to see if the version they've got is complete or not...
2004-12-04, 5:30 AM #17
All they would have to do is add a clause to the EULA stating that if you're installing an illegal version of the game, you agree to accept [whatever they want to put on.]

Nobody reads it anyway.

but a wrong + a right = 0, that will get you no where

why dont we just put a box on the street and it has a title of a new game that isnt realeased yet on it. when they open the box it will really be a bomb.
