Funny Gun Battle
2004-12-04, 8:53 AM #1
Go to http://oldeenglish.org/gymclass.html for an awesome, home-made gun-battle. Pretty funny stuff, I just found it after Darth Slaw posted a link to that website recently. :D

[P.S.: Hopefully, this isn't "0ld n3ws."]

Forget maeve, the guy who wins the battle looks EXACTLY like zully in that one scene when they venture out into the hallway. Right after the dude gets shot out there, the winner looks just like him. ;)

Does this remind anyone else of the excellent gunfighting episode in the second series of Spaced?
If it breaks, you get to keep both pieces.

That was pretty awesome... the sniper... the basketball rolling across the court like a tumble weed... all very good, and the start really suprised me with the way the one girl started it all, was not expecting that to happen.

lol I love the facial emotions by the sniper.

The whole thing was great.

This makes me happy I don't have a gym class anymore... Nicely done, I'd say it was even better than "Hard Copy." (another ameteur-made gunfight movie, involving a terrorist plot to steal a server backup)

The shotmaking left alot to be desired. Do ameteur film makers actually WATCH real movies or what? It's not that complicated to make good shots...

It is a clever idea... But ultimately I think it's kinda crap.

Hey Bill, show us a link to your movie you created at that age with superior camera angles or SHUTUP.

Sorry to come in and be the film elitist... but alot of ameteur films really piss me off... these kids get their ideas about how they want to shoot something, and then they don't even worry about making the shot interesting when they're shooting it, and the don't worry about editing it properly afterward. You know, forgive me for this, but it's just really not that good. I have only seen a handful of ameteur films that are worth anything, and I go to a film school for god's sake.

I'll post some of my stuff next semester when I've got my good camera.

And don't give me that crap about how "oh it's good for their age." Yeah, uh, do people suddenly realize how to make a movie when they turn 22 or something? It's not like getting a driver's license. If you decide you want to make a movie, you shoud pay attention to how movies are made, or don't make one at all. Take a little pride in something ffs. I mean seriously... If they wanted to make this movie good... they could have just watched desperado and face off to see how good gunfights are filmed. Don't waste your time trying to emulate the matrix, because you don't have the technology to do so.

Some of the problem is that they are simply too lazy to shoot all of the shots neccesary. I'm sorry but gunfights and action scenes of all kinds require alot of shots... For two reasons. One... In order to really capture the essence of a gunfight, you NEED alot of what is considered poor shotmaking, so you have to switch it up alot to keep the viewer entertained... And two... There is alot going on in a gunfight... And it helps if we can see what everyone is doing. Using a wide establishing shot for several seconds during a gunfight is just not a good idea. We need close ups. And low angles are a bad idea unless it's a pov shot. If you pay attention... no one ever uses low angels in REAL movies... Wanna know why? THEY SUCK! Stop using them! Also... Forced "clever" angles suck too. Don't try to pose people in a certain way to get a cool shot with them doing something. It looks like you forced someone to sit this way or stand that way... because that's what you did. And therefore it takes us out of the illusion that we get when watching a movie.

And I don't want to hear about how it was supposed to be funny... comedies are not just innocent from the laws of cinematography.

Uh.. Bill? You ever stop to think that these kids don't know about the laws of cinematography? Reasons being: they're not in a fricking film school; they don't care about it so much and they're doing it as a hobby; etc? Get off your high horse simply because you learned a few things at film school. And yeah, you should take their age seriously. Reason being? They're in high school; not some cinematography school. Once again, I challenge you to produce a superior movie you produced when you were there age. If you can't do it, then you have no right to be critical.

One of the gunshot sounds comes from Deus Ex, or whereever Deus EX got their sounds.

The whole was pretty cool, I loved how the gun stuff started.

I'm with Freelancer here. Some kids with a video camera and sound effects wanted to make a movie, and did a pretty good job of it. The movie is entertaining. Sure it isn't going to win an Emmy, but is it really that important that they have what some people have decided are "perfect" camera angles? So they didn't use a tripod, it doesn't mean the whole thing is crap.

That was cool and hilarious, especially the sniper. I thought the gym teacher was going to pull off gun kata or something.

I hated the sniper, what a drama queen, everything else was awesome :D

I thought the same thing! There were a few places where it would have fit in perfectly.

The Gym Teacher looks like the big brother guy in E.T.

The point is, if they paid attention to cinematography in movies, this could have been really cool. It's a good concept and it was almost really good... but they missed the boat. And regardless of whether I have the right to criticize or not, I'm still going to.

You don't have the right to criticize George Lucas unless you make something better, but you all still do it.

Something tells me these kids didn't have the financial resources and backing that Lucas does.

Screwing up a nerd-loved sequal (or prequal as the case may be) is a whole different kettle of fish than an amateur original production. :)

Bill, Honestly, WTF

These are HIGHSCHOOL STUDENTS... not film school students, something like this may be for a class drama project, or a hobby... something to do for the hell of it. I doubt it's going to be entered in a film festival or contest.

Honestly, it's an ametuer film for a reason... they are amatuers! d'uh. for what it is, it's a good film.

1. Everyone lay off of Bill, please. I mean, seriousyl...he has a point. If you're going to make a movie, you should try to do all of it well. And don't say they shouldn't have to because they're kids because
2. THIS IS WHAT THEY DO. Look at their website. It's awesome! Honestly, I don't care that they don't have excellent cinematography, but if they had put as much thought and effort into that as they do with their writing, they'd look much more professional.
3. Isn't it weird how if you start numbering stuff it looks weird if you only do 2 points...it's like...why did you number them? So I'm adding a third point.

Edit: Oh, I thought of a real third point. But it's 4 now.

4. I absolutely hate the "then why don't you do better?" argument. You don't have to BE good at something to know what is good and what isn't. I have no idea how to built a rocket, but if I see a rocket that explodes in flight, I can safely assume that it was not that good a rocket. I canr ecognize good cinematography, or at least what appeals to me, but I am not a director.

Yeah good point Bob, let's all go laugh at retards because they should be better, if they're going to live, why not do it properly?

That wasn't that great. And why did all the bodies disappear then suddenly reappear?
I can't think of anything to put here right now.

Yeah, I noticed that. You can't say for certain whether they were/weren't there, but I agree there were a couple of scenes that seemed inconsistent at a glance.
