Google Browser?
2004-12-04, 6:14 PM #1
Looks like Google might try it's hand at toppling IE too. I guess building a browser off Firefox still counts as building your own.

I hope they can make a avant/firefox browser, combining the ease of avant and speed of firefox... Mmm....

What is the point ? You already use their searching and email, what more is a google browser going to do that existing microsoft competitor browsers don't do? It would just give one more company more and more power over your computer activity (thereby creating another monopoly). It would be fine IMO if they teamed up with Firefox or another browser to have an "Official browser of Google," but why do any more?
Can anyone give me an answer besides greed?

I'd love to try out a Google OS!

Bobbert:

For the moment they are teaming up with Firefox, it sounds like they may just be changing a few things. I don't think Google could create a monopoly in it's current form. They don't have the power or influence to put their software into millions of users homes unless those users CHOOSE their software. Microsoft, on the other hand, comes installed of almost every single new computer. It's shoved down our throats. I understand your point and I agree that we do NOT need another monopoly, I just think that Google is a long, long way from that.

I don't like Opera's built in download manager, or bookmark system, and I think it's ugly. Just a personal thing.

Man, is Google just trying to piss off Microsoft or what? MS should do the smart thing and buy Google before it's too late. Not that I wouldn't be interested in seeing a bit of competition for Microsoft.

Sorry to be nit-picky, but you can't have TWO monopolies in a single market by definition. When there become more than one major player, you have yourself an ologopoly made up of a few big players.

Example - Tyres say, the big companies are Michelin, Bridgestone, Pirelli. None of them have a monopoly, because the others also have a significant market share.

You can all go back to bickering now, hope you've all learned something for the day. :)

[EDIT] Google denied these claims about a week ago, but admittedly can't be arsed to read the article and see if they've actually changed their minds...

Erm, Microsoft seems to have gotten where it is by many illegal and unethical business practices. Google on the otherhand appears to be quite honest and just make a fine product that people like. They aren't doing anything to force it down your throat; people merely flock to it because they like it.

A Google browser could be a major blow to Microsoft. If there's any company that can start or help to "put an end" to Microsoft, it would be Google. Hah, funny that huh? A search engine.

Yeah, the reason Microsoft had a problem is because people were flocking to their product because they bought everything else.
2004-12-05, 7:27 AM #25
It's actually in Microsoft's best interests to stop allow another browser to overtake them. The problem with IE is that it's had to focus on backwards-compatibility for so long that it's turning it into a development nightmare, as soon as IE isn't the browser of choice they can start afresh.

I'd love to see you guys measure the milliseconds each browser takes, and then combine the fact your ISP gives you slightly different speeds of connection each second, and then the distance of each server added on... it'd be funny. It's almost impossible to say a browser is faster than another, except that apparently Avant is, according to PC World magazine or something. Avant isn't that well known, but I do think it's one of the best browsers availiable. Try it out... I seriously recoomend it. As for a google OS, I'll stick to windows XP... unless it includes froogle on the desktop, that'd be worth it. (err yes.)

On my laptop, FF is the fastest to load, Opera is the faster at DL'ing pages (the renderer just seems quicker on mine), IE is poopants and avant is IE in disguise.

And I like gmail.

And you can have your google coffee, but you can't take away my Yorkshire Tea or I will tear someone a new arse!!!

We're talking about loading times, as in how long it takes to load on your computer. Not to mention, Avant sucks major wang. It's a vamped up IE, which bodes not well in and of itself.

Yes, that is perhaps the biggest problem I see with the expansion of Google, unless they make a new name based off of Google for every new thing they do, such as they did with Froogle and GMail.

Also, on the note of Internet browsers, while Opera can make you a threat to the Internet, it also seems to be second only to IE when it comes to security issues...
