At least according to Australians...

Makes sense to me :p

So, post a favourite book of yours, and why you think it's better than LotR and / or the Bible.

I haven't even read any SW books. I have considered it enough to stick to the movies and some games.

Yeah... The book. LOTR it is. I think it's a bit more entertaining than bible. But of course bible wasn't even intended to be entertainment...

Neither was LOTR.

Discworld > LOTR.

LOTR just failed to interest me. Pratchett has a lot of good humour.
Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.

I tried to read the Lord of the Rings. I really did. I even got to the part where Galadriel gave the fellowship their gifts. I really tried. I did.

Then Robert Jordan released his new novel, and I realized that the book I was reading was really, really dry and boring.

Stranger in a Strange Land is a really good book, as is The Giver and Ender's Game.

Favorite books of mine include, but are not limited to:
Catch 22 by Joseph Heller
Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series by Douglas Adams

...and some others that I cannot quite mentally pinpoint at the moment. Perhaps I post some more if I can think of them.

I love The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion beyond words. I'm also a huge fan of The Wheel of Time, The Sword of Truth, and A Song of Ice and Fire. I don't like to compare books to one another, for each seems to offer something that the others don't. They're all special, in their own way.

I'm currently reading David Farland's The Runelords series. I hear they're even making a Runelords movie. I wonder if they'll be showing reaver anus' alot. I am enjoying the series so far, but damn can it get gross sometimes.

Chronicles of Narnia owns all other fantasy works. Just so darn perfect.

The Dune Chronicles are the best sci fi books I've read, followed by the Hitchhiker's Guide books.

The Dune prequels, by universe butcher Kevin J Anderson, are the worst I've read. They're even worse than Young Jedi Knight by the same butcher.

Did anyone actually see the show "My favourite book" last night?

For those that missed it, a series of comedians(!?) portayed the plot of each of the books that made the top 10. Most of them were crap, but the Umbilical Brothers were hilarious. Luckily I captured it with my set top box.

I was watching RotK the other night and I realized something:

I frigging HATE LotR. Seriously, the crap is easily predictable, its boring, and the only cool character was Gandalf. Frodo should have died a horrible and bloody death. If I ever were to recieve the LotR on DVD, I would skip any scene that had Frodo or Sam in it. Sam should have bashed Golem's head with a stone and thrown it off a cliff when Frodo slept, then slit Frodo's throat.

Aragon looked like a rejected Calvin Klein model who had a thing for elves.

Leggo My Eggo looked more like a woman than some of the women I've dated.

Gimley had crappy weapons.

Sauramon was an overhyped pansy who, at the first sign of danger, looses all his powers and can't do jack.

And Sauron. A giant frigging eye on a tower. Get the damn chain saws out and cut the thing down. Ohhh, a giant eye, ohhh, ahh. How is he defeated the first time? He gets his finger cut off. Wow, what an amazing bad guy, all that power and his finger is cut off as easily as I flush the toilet.

The ring makes you disappear, wow, not cool. Maybe it should of done something cool like shot fire out of it and created earth quakes and lightning.

And at the beginning of FotR, Gandalf goes to Mount Doom, looks at it, rides away, and then 3 years later Frodo finally makes it.

Frodo should of been thrown into the volcano for is stupid arrogance. Come to think of it, all Hobbits should be thrown into it. They were annoying.

Gandalf ruled.
I can't think of anything to put here right now.

The BEST bit is Gandalf going:

GANDALF: "Quick! You are in danger! You have the One Ring that could cause the downfall of the world! We must do something!

Catch you in another 15 years or so."

THEN

GANDALF: "It is urgent! You are in danger as we speak! Ringwraiths are tracking you down! You must leave immediately!"

FRODO: "Sure, but can we take six months to pack our stuff and get our affairs in order?"

GANDALF: "Hey, whatever. Sure, go ahead. I'll catch you later."

Story of B is my new bible, closely followed by Ishmael and My Ishmael, but Ringworld [not to be confused with Discworld] and The Ringworld Engineers are great books, as well.

Having read a great deal of the books mentioned, I gotta say the NJO series is incredible, my favorite, and a must read for any story seeking star wars fan. Somebody mentioned the Chronicles of Narnia as being one of the best fantasy books...I couldnt even finish the first novel because it was so utterly childish, I suppose if I were 6 or 7 again I'd enjoy it along with the imense Goosebumps collection I once had (I guess when you read a novel in under an hour it might be time to seek a higher reading level). Currently, I'm looking foward to reading the DaVinci Code as it seems like its been on the top 10 list for nearly 3 years now.

Ive also read the Hobbit and the LotR tril 4 times now, once in Jr. High, once my senior year, and two more times in accordance with the movies (i've also read the paraody "bored with the rings" kinda odd but humerous) and I find some of it dull as stated before, however the movies helped greatly in picking up the finer details you miss while trying to stay awake reading. But in no form is it my favorite series. I often found myself eager to put it down rather than read on, but of course, theyre still awesome.

my 2 cents I guess...

I love the Lord of the Rings books and I think that they're excellent, but I couldn't say that they're my favorite books to read. I mean, I guess they're just the type of thing where you (or at least I) have to be in the mood to read them, otherwise I won't make it too far.

As for my favorite books, well I never claimed to have distinguished tastes but I love the Harry Potter series and any book by Meg Cabot (particularly those she origionally wrote under the name of Jenny Carroll...leave me alone okay? I love her characters, they're awesome and she has an excellent sense of humor and....you know what, who asked you, really [/defensive mode])

When I want something to sink my teeth into I'll pick up some of the classics, your Tolkien, Jane Austen; Les Miserables has been on my "to Read" list, but I would definitley pick up JK Rowling or Meg Cabot on a regular basis.

I owe a lot to Les Miserables... It taught to me that to make a good story great, some central, important protagonist must die.

Heh... Les Miserables was one of the very first novels I ever read, actually. Along with LOTR and The Surprising Adventures of Baron Munchausen... They are all good works of art.
