Uhhh, Football (or Soccer) is, last time I checked, the most commonly played and watched sport on the planet. Little Brazilian boys you see wandering around in the street almost always have at least one possession - a soccer ball. The last worldcup was also watched by millions (properly more than a billion, but I'm unsure of this). People traveled from across the globe to go to Korea and Japan, forked out their life savings, and even... you get the idea.

They're for covering the shin pads. Getting kicked in the shin hurts, y'know? So much that they don't encumber themselves with any other protection.

I remember that something similar happened a while ago to a Cameroon player too during a Cameroon - Columbia semi-final match in Paris.

If it breaks, you get to keep both pieces.
