Caviar?
2004-12-06, 11:41 AM #1
I don't remember ever eating the stuff, and I doubt if I ever bother to. The appearence of caviar doesn't look too appealing, but I do wonder how it tastes like. Even though this dish probably can be bought anywhere, how come it is considered as a renowned "delicacy." I assume it's good with alcohol...

Yes, this is a random caviar thread (or any food of that sort). Anyone tried and likes this stuff?

Lemme see if I remember this properly...

Caviar = Fish poo

Roe = Fish eggs

I'd try 'em both, but I'd have to close my eyes and think of Britain until the jury came back.

Caviar is eggs, and it tastes quite well. It's a once-in-a-long-period something to eat though.

It is black, but it has nothing to do with excrement.

Caviar is the processed, salted roe of various species of fish, most notably sturgeon. It is commercially marketed throughout the world as a delicacy and is eaten principally as a garnish or spread, as with hors d'oeuvres.

Today the best caviar comes from sturgeon fished from the Caspian Sea by Iranian and Russian fishermen. Some of the highest prices are paid for Beluga, Ossetra, and Sevruga varieties (note that the large-grained Beluga caviar comes from the Beluga sturgeon and has nothing to do with the Beluga whale). Dwindling yields have resulted in less costly alternatives, processed from the roe of whitefish and North Atlantic salmon, becoming popular.

Due to its high price, it is synonymous in Western culture with luxury and wealth in the same way that personal jets, yachts, and mansions are commonly regarded. In Russia and other cultures, though an expensive delicacy, it is a common part of celebrations such as wedding and holiday feasts.

The name caviar comes from the Persian word ÎǐÂæÑ (Khag-avar) which means "the roe-generator". This name in Persian is actually used for calling the sturgeon itself and later also the roe.

If it breaks, you get to keep both pieces.

Well that about wraps it up.

Do the little orange eggs in some sushi count as caviar?

That is roe methinks.

Caviar smells and tastes like salty fish guts....it seems like something to catch fish with...not like something a human should consume....

Caviar tastes like really salty slimey raw fish. Had it once out of curiosity when I was about 12, and let me tell you, never again.

Well first and foremost let me start by saying I dont like seafood to being with so I might have some bias.

Now the story begins lol...

I was eating out with my family one day and I decided "meh what the hell, imma try some caviar"

I put it in my mouth and between the fishy taste and the weird sensation of so many tiny fish eggs wiggling around on my tongue I almost spit it out right there!

It was funny stuff, it tasted horrible (I guess the taste is acquired). I grabbed my water and some of the bread on the table to try and get rid of the taste and the sensation.

Never again will I try fish eggs lol, just not for me

Salmon eggs are commonly used as bait.
