Free Disk management tools?
2004-12-06, 4:35 PM #1
I need some recommendations for free (or not if it's worth it) disk management tool suites. I need a fast defragger, a good partition manager tool, and stuff like that.

Actually, I only need those ones, but if anyone recommends anything else that sounds good I'll try it out.

A suite isn't even crucial, just some tools to get the job done quickly/safely

You can probably take the words 'fast' and 'good' out, but doesnt Windows come with that stuff?

The Norton Suite is far from free but it does a great job at all of that. Definitely worth looking at.

For free, I just pop in a Linux LiveCD and use fdisk for my partitioning needs.

Windows Defrag takes 4 or 5 hours to defrag a 12 gig drive with 60% of it free, at only like 18% fragmentation. That is horrible.

I've thought about norton disk tools, but I have very limited space on this drive. How much space does it really take up?

If you use a decent filesystem on a linux box you never have to defrag.

Slowly migrating this box over to linux.
For now, I installed my roomies older version of norton.

WinXP fragments a partition really fast. This is a bloody fact. Fortunately defragmentation isn't really such a big issue with the shipped tool, since it can be done o/n when I'm sleeping.

Defragging: Norton sucks. I use windows defrag, but I run it very rarely (maybe once every six months.) so the speed doesn't matter to me.

Partitioning: Unless you opt for Partition Magic which costs $$$, window's partition system is pretty good. Although nothing beats linux's cfdisk, both for ease of use and overall compatibility.

This is why you go NTFS, not FAT. FAT=defraggled.
