most videos over 2 hours wouldnt fit on one CDR... maybe not even 2. this is pretty small, gbk. especially for avi, but divx is good stuff.

That's long. Especially considering the length of JK and HL1 speedruns.... would anyone actually watch that from start to finish?

It must have been interesting having to ration the speed boost and such. Though the boring scripted parts that you can't run through probably increased the time drastically. The HL1 speedrun is 57 minutes long..

i dislike how you always use the word scripted as if there can be any action in any game that isnt run by some sort of script, freelancer.

you cant just go and say, "ok computer, i want you to create a totally new script, not ever thought of before by the creators and make dialogue on the fly for situations the characters have no before knowledge of" because games never have and never will have that until true artificial intelligence is created. and even when it is... thats still gonna be some kinda script. a constantly self updating script, but its all scripts with a computer. (another thought i just had... if true AI is created, robots and such are going to need an infinately large memory storage space(even humans learn millions of things a day by seeing things they havent before)... so true AI in video games will probably never be, unless there's like some kinda perpetual energy-like thing that lets memory go on forever.

and for there to be any plot whatsoever (some will whine and say there still isnt one, but there definately is) you need scripted events to tell the story.

Scripts and AI are different. By script, I'm referring to having to wait around in Kleiner's lab for ten mintues listening to people jabber. A script is totally unchanging. At least AI produces a slight semblance of randomness and intelligence. Can I predict exactly when a combine soldier will toss a nade at me or which side of the cover he will pop from behind to shoot at me? No, not really. Even though his actions are dictated by programming constructs, at least they aren't the same every time.

By the way; I agree with your statement that just mysteriously appeared. ;) In order to have a plot, there needs to be scripted sequences. From what you say, it's like I'm lambasting all scripted sequences. Not so. I just don't like the boring ones, like both of the labs.

it was more like 2 minutes as i remember, and it was somewhat important, and besides... you can just go mess with the teleporter while they're talking. why do you think they put those cool things in there?

The perfect example of a non-intrusive scripted sequence (the kind I like) is when you approach an open plaza in City 17 to find a couple of rebels hauling down a viewscreen of Dr. Breen blabbering away about something and cheering as it comes toppling down. It doesn't halt my progress through the game. I can admire the sequence as I go along, and I was really quite impressed with that one. Conversely, I can choose to ignore it if I so desire. I don't even have to look at it or acknowledge it. But when I approach the labs, I cringe at the thought of having to wait there going through the same scene again.

Don't get me wrong, I don't have severe ADD and this really isn't a big problem for me. However, I wish they would add more of the non-intrusive kind of scenes.

45 minutes. Done by RandomEngy too.

Huh.. I must have been thinking about that other one listed there that's an hour. I vividly recall that it was about an hour. Maybe I'll have to watch RandomEngy's version. Shaving 15 minutes off the other time is impressive.

I imagine you are like me and hate the intro videos that you cannot skip?

The two times are because the 45 minute one isn't a "true" speedrun, that is, it's made with several demos (and several runs) put together. While it still attempts to stick with the nature of "one run", the hour-ish one is one demo-recording. That's why there's two.

And I watched the HL2 video :) Though I think I'd like to see it again when the game's been out longer, and someone has a super-nice computer that can record it at a higher resolution like the HL1 speedruns.

And about the scripted scenes stuff: I agree to an extent. That is, I do prefer when they can work in the looser, flexible scenes you can watch or ignore.
