Should I get ICQ?
2004-04-14, 2:05 PM #1
I've had 2 people in the past 2 days ask for my ICQ number.
Anyone still run the ICQ client rather than something compatible like Trillian?
My last ICQ number was in the 400 thousands from 1997.

I'm a trillian man myself. I havent used the icq client in years. I've heard it kinda sucks now that AOL has taken over icq though.

I use Miranda, and I never used to get the tons of "omg hai want 2 cybar??" messages from bots, now I get many per day since I recently reinstalled it. What's going on here?

I also use trillian but i've hated the ICQ client since the first time I used it. I knew it was bad from the moment i installed it and it set my homepage to icq.com

I haven't used it in years... except once, some German girl from another forum asked for my ICQ number so I downloaded ICQ again and got it for her. Then we talked about once or twice, and completely lost interest in our boring, shallow, meaningless "conversations," if you can call them that, so I uninstalled it again.

Yes, Bots are the reason to check the "Only allow messages from users on my contact list" option. I'm sure there is a similar option in Miranda.

I couldn't find one, but maybe it's this status request option...I'll check that.

I can honestly say bots NEVER have messaged me in AIM. Dunno why. But yah, miranda isn't that great...I want a client that is just like AIM, otherwise, what's the point?

meaning supports all the features.

And word is you can get people's ICQ numbars into your AIM list.

Miranda has a lot of useful features, but does lack some of the things AIM has, like WORKING file transfers. Gaim has pretty much everything, but I find it to be pretty slow and clunky in Windows. Miranda is light, fast, and most importantly, has no annoying banners and ads.

I still do, but I'm old fashion. That and all of my friends that I talk to either still do or use Trillian, so it's not inhibiting anything.

I use ICQ, but only maybe twice a week.

All my friends starting using it about 8 years ago, and we still do now.

Get Trillian. You get the advantages of the various protocols, minus the moronic bloated idiocy of the respective clients.

Regarding ICQ itself.. ugh.. the protocols were never the best and since AOL bought them there's no point in using ICQ just to avoid the evil AIM Overmind. I've had soooo many more connection/stability/throughput/visibility errors with the ICQ protocols than with AIM. Though AIM's been a bit snarky lately, but i hear that's an actual AIM fault, not client-side. ICQ does have the distinction of seeming to have a larger buffer size, like i could send 8000bytes in a buffer in ICQ, whereas AIM [recently at least] seems to refuse anything over 2500 [and actually seemed to drop me consistently if i tried sending over 5000]. But overall, get them to use AIM, honestly.

I like Aim because I can just click add buddy then type in "SAJN Master" but with ICQ its like add friend "01923837162"

I never get messaged by bots on ICQ. I cant figure out why... I think it might have something to do with the difference between the "Available" and "Free For Chat" statuses.

You just need something other than MSN because you hang out in a place where a lot of us hate MS and therefore won't sign up for an MSN number.

Actually, I have quite a few -ians on my msn buddy list. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

A more accurate statement would be that majority of us use 2 or more of the four popular im clients (aim, icq, msn, and yahoo), so it really doesnt matter which one you choose.

It's rather funny: Here in Germany everybody uses ICQ. (Or Miranda, or Trillian, or gaim)

I use Trillian, and I have about 2 AIM contacts and 2 MSN contacts - all from massassi [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif] The rest of my ~100 contacts all use ICQ. I made the experience that most people use it, so that's why I use it.

And I never got any bot messages.

I bought Trillian 2 Pro, after using the free version for some month, I realy love it, and I have some nice skins [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]
