Mwahahahahahaha! The day is theirs GBK.

According to /.,Colinux is going to change the world. I've already downloaded, and I'm reading up on it right now. Hopefully by this evening I'll have a windows based linux distro running. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

I've heard that you could run some disros of linux off of their cds, but I take it that this one can be run from WITHIN windows?

It's not a distro. It makes it so ANY distro can run WITHIN windows. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

Think of how important this is. Now you can have a fully functioning linux system running from within windows, and if you make a mistake or something, you can use your windows OS to find out how to fix it. Learning how to use Linux just got dumbed down 800 steps.

nice-- does it make linux any less stable b/c of that?

Of course, it would be easy to run windows inside of linux IF we had the source code to windows. BeOS did the same thing.

I don't know. Read the links. It's in EARLY development right now, so I'm sure it's not steady as a rock. But with further development I bet it'll be great. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

I'm thinking of it from a learning standpoint. Part of what got me frustrated with Linux was that I had to keep switching machines in order to get help when I screwed something up (something that rarely happens anymore), but with this, the user could easily switch back to using his windows interface, get help and then go to fixing his linux distro. Not to mention that you could use all of your linux apps while using your windows apps and both systems can access each other's filesystems.

So it took the best part of Linux, stability, and threw it out the window. Sounds fun. Great idea, bad in real use.

It only runs under 2K and XP. Arguably the only two "stable" builds of Windows. In development of course it's not going to work top-notch right away. But after further development and testing it could be really really useful.

Cygwin, an early version of this, has existed for years. Infact, AFAIK, COLinus actully uses Cygwin...

But Cygwin only makes an X server. This allows you to natively run the entire operating system.

WTF? Cygwin is ALOT more than an X server. Infact, the version I used to run didnt even have an X server.

From what I've read (granted, I've not actually *used* it) it's not used for much more than an X Server. Including what they use it for with Colinux.

Bleh, hasn't anyone heard of VMWare? I've had it running Linux distros for a few years now - reliably. I use it to test out all sorts of OS's before committing to them.

It's a nice idea, but when I used to use linux, my main motivation was, unlike windows, it didn't crash. If you're running linux in windows, you have all the confusingness of linux, with the added crashfulness of windows which it is running in!

That would be cool.. if it had documentation.. and a good explanation of how to make it work with an already existing linux partition.

That is an actual Linux interface!

But really... yeah, I think you can run GUI with it.

here is something kind of similar-- linux that can be installed on the windows partition safely (or so it claims).

http://topologi-linux.sourceforge.net/index.php

does anyone have any experience with it? If so, it it worth my time to download and install this, and is it safe?

Linux on NTFS would suck. Last time I checked it was a BIG mistake to even turn on write support for NTFS in linux.
