Yeah. Good luck getting someone like that on the phone.

How old it the iPod? If it's out of warranty, there probably isn't a whole lot they can do about it aside from telling you to buy a new one.

And yet another reason NOT TO BUY APPLE PRODUCTS! YAY!

It's quite possible he dropped it too many times and the hard drive corrupted. In that case, it's really his fault. (And he should have bought an MP3 player, since those solid-state ram players are usually much sturdier.)

iPods are just about built like tanks. They'd have to be. They put a harddrive in it. You're going to need ALOT of protection and cushioning for a harddrive. He'd have to have dropped it A LOT from high up to get it to really screw up.

Then there's the possibility that his drive wasn't that good to begin with. Bad hardware happens. Even from Apple.

You'd think so phoenix, but hard-drive mp3 players have moving parts, and this makes them extremely fragile, and in the iPod's cash they use a larger hard drive, so the additional mass can also lead to easy breakage.
2004-12-11, 9:28 AM #18
Definitely sounds like he dropped a few too many times, or dunked it in a glass of orange juice.

Just call customer support already. I dont know where you get this 'person in charge' thing from, they're much less likely to give a toss about your problem than someone whose job is to specifically care about your problem.

I never said they weren't fragile. It's like any other harddrive, if you drop it, it's going to get damaged. But this is a very mobile harddrive. They HAVE to cushion it from bumps and jolts and the like. And to a small extent, it's built to withstand a minor fall. But by no means should you treat it like it's indestructable. The harddrive is fairly well protected, but it isn't going to be safe from everything. Depending upon his iPod's age, it's either been dropped to many times, worn out, or the parts were just bad.

I don't know why people rap on Apple so much. There's really no reason to. Their good computers--they just have **** for compatibility and cost way too much. Hardware wise, there's nothing wrong with 'em.

Apple is a good company.

As their satisfied user since the 80's, er, it's cool.

Though I don't have any Apple products anymore. I'd like to. If only all games were compatible with those computers.

Apple computers infinitely more stable than Windows run computers. I don't care what you say, I've run all sorts of Apple computers, I've run all sorts of PCs, and all my best experiences have been with Apples. Yeah, there are a lot of compatability issues, and thats a reason for a lot of people not to buy them, but if you want to do things that don't involve computer games, i'd definately suggest getting an Apple.

iPods are really well designed, but especially now that Apple is pumping them out of the factory at a fast pace 24/7, I wouldn't be suprised if a lot of them are disfunctional. I know some people who have had disfunctional iPods, and they send them to Apple and get new ones for free, no questions asked.

However being as it sounds like yo uhave an older model, I doubt they'd do that for your brother.

Yeah... I've been writing a lot of essays on these forums recently.

I'd suggest Apple too, to anyone who can waste a few grand. And doesn't like games. Or a lot of other stuff. But hey, to each his own. I don't like 'em, but that doesn't make them bad machines (and hey, like the guy said, don't worry about upgrading, just buy a new one!)

wow Yoshi i couldn't have said it better myself

and Eversor he dosn't want a new one, he wants to complain about the one that he has that dosn't work

Then write a letter. What he's trying to do is completely pointless. There isn't a damned thing they can do about it, and they don't care. It's busted. Unless it was a bad part, it isn't their fault it's busted. So you see, complaining to them is utterly POINTLESS.

Oh, and a little FYI on the upgrade thing. The towers are pretty upgradeable. It's the all-in-one units like the iMac and eMac that aren't going to be upgradeable very easily. The most you can do to those is up the RAM and put in a different HD

Yeah, The towers are made with expandabilty in mind. You can really pimp out a computer.

Eh, you can get a good machine for around 1k.

Apples are stylish, and fairly function, but you're essentially paying more for a machine that won't do as much. (Personally, I think the 30 seconds it takes to reboot my computer every time it crashes, say, once every 4 or 5 days makes up for the extra 2 or 3 seconds it takes a mac to open pretty much anything in my experience.)

My computer hasn't crashed ever, and it takes me 5 seconds to boot. Booyah.

And maybe you CAN get machines for 1 grand--but are they really worth a damn? I mean hell, AOL sells PCs for about 300 now, 200 maybe. I forget.

Your computer hasn't crashed ever? I find that hard to believe, unless you're qualifying crash as dropping it on the floor...
2004-12-11, 4:28 PM #33
Not once. I format ~every 3 months, and I've had some bad virii, but never crashed. Owned it almost a year now (like a month or so from now is when I bought it)

Define crash.
2004-12-11, 4:39 PM #35
That's got to be an exaggeration Yoshi. 5 seconds? That's insane, I'd love to know how that's possible. Never crashing an HD is possible, and if you consider a crash when your computer reboots itself, then I guess that's possible. It hasn't happened to me in a long time, but program crash quite frequently.

pc != windows ;)

I would love to have an apple. I would probably install a linux on it anyway :) But it's just too expensive.

Yes, in fact, Apple customer service is very very good, if you talk to the right people. My brother got his 20GB Third Gen IPod for 400 bucks. Then, 3 weeks later, Apple came out with the 4th Gen iPod, along with the 100 dollar drop in price (which made the 20GB 4th Gen only 300 bucks. No one warned us because Apple keeps their releases super secret, so no one new).

We called, and asked for the "REGIONAL MANAGER". She gave us 120 dollars back, so my brother got the extended warranty, iSkin, FM transmittor, and a whole bunch of crap.

Moral to the story: Ask for the Regional Manager.

Why would you install Linux on Mac OS X, when Mac OS X is practically Linux, except it looks a lot prettier. Seriously, just go into the Terminal in OS X, and anything you do in Linux you can do in the Terminal.

Exactly. Why is it that no one EVER understands that?

I'm a computer support technician for Apple...... lol its funny you ask that.

When you purchase your iPod you can purchase the Apple Care Protection Plan, which provides 3 years of phone support, etc.

Good luck getting anyone with power, because that doesn't happen. It has that appearance, but you're really only talking to another representative...

If you have questions you can go to http://support.apple.com and search the knowledge base.
